problems with netmeeting on win2k |
|
|
hello everyone,
the problem i'm having with this soft is pretty common, ie. a guy sees my
feed and i neither see nor hear his. now, i use a cable connection and my ip
is 192.168... and he's got a fixed ip. i also have armor2net firewall
installed, in which netmeeting is set to pass. even if i shut it off i still
get zip on my side. has anyone ran into such problem before me? if so,
please help.
regards,
adam

The symptom you are seeing happens on all computers behind a NAT of some
kind connecting in a NetMeeting call to a party outside of the NAT'ed LAN
you are on and is due to the nature of the H.323 protocol used for
audio/video and NAT itself. Some NAT's have built in H.323 proxy functions
to deal with this issue - most do not.
Whether you can do something about this depends on what NAT device is being
used and who controls it. If you have control of the device and it has a DMZ
feature putting the NM client in the DMZ should allow the DMZ client to have
two way audio/video.

If the "fixed" IP is still a private NAT'ed IP ( 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x,
172.16-31..x.x are private IPs). it would make no difference.

Brian, could he "port foward" the netmeeting (or h.323) specific ports? It
has been awhile for me. Do you remember what ports H.323 uses? Also, if he
is setting up the call from inside the NAT to the machine not behind a NAT,
shouldn't this work? I know some commercial products have figured out a
solution.

H.323 uses tcp 1720 for setup but a set of negotiated UDP ports in the
32767 -65536 range so forwarding is not a solution. The solution most often
used is to use the dmz feature of the router ( which forwards all
*unsolicited* traffic to the dmz client).

No even then an H.323 gateway or proxy is required.

I am nor sure what commercial products you are referring to. The only
solution for H.323 that I know of is an H.323 gateway ( often with a
gatekeeper) of some kind. Some ( usually older) routers have a built in
H.323 gateway
