Netmeetng used to work on my machine until recently. It
may have been a service pack or other Windows Upgrade
that did it, but for some reason when I type 'conf' on
the run line (or choose it from the menu) it now just
gives me an error: Netmeeting could not start. Please
restart your computer and try again." Of course, doing so
does nothing. The only workaround I have found is to
right-click on the Remote Desktop Icon and hit Exit, and
then restart NetMeeting. Of course, I'd like to have it
work normally, and leave my Remote Desktop activated so I
can log in from somewhere else. This is where the second
(possibly related) problem is: It won't let me activate
Remote Desktop Sharing (when I right-click on the Remote
Desktop Sharing Icon and choose "Activate Remote Desktop
Sharing"). My coworker has the same problem now too. Any
clues?

We're runing XP Pro with latest SP1 updates.

I don't know what the problem could be you could try stopping NM and using
the de/reinstall procedure ( actually what it does is reinitialize the
Netmeeting registry entries as NetMeeting files cannot be deleted or
overwritten),

The procedure is described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q267958 (the .inf
file is likely "hidden' so if you search for files be sure to include hidden
files in the search)

Thanks Brian.
I tried that before and just now again, but it didn't
work. Odd thing was, after I ran the uninstall I decided
to run it again. Well, both times it said it was deleting
files as it listed them and deleted them. But, if it
really deleted it the first time, hwo could it do it
again? So that makes me wonder if the undelete really
worked, or whether those files are protected and the
system won't let them be deleted? (I am administrator on
my own machine, but isn't there some other security
setting that prevents certain system files from being
deleted?)

I just confirmed that the uninstall doesn't really work
unless I do something to prevent the automatic
restoration of files. (As a test I deleted the nac.dll
file from the NetMeeting directory and it came right
back.)

As I said in my post -- NetMeeting files cannot be deleted or overwritten --
all the procedure effectively does in reinitialize the registry entries.

Yes the NM files are protected and cannot be deleted.

Sorry I overlooked that. In that case - no , it didn't
work or do anything.

I have not seen a problem with your symptoms before -- not sure what to do.

What about if I temporarily disable the System File
Protection (using the registry twqeak and binary file
hack), then uninstall Netmeeting and reinstall?

I don't think that will work -- besides I don't think there is a problem
with the NetMeeting files ( after all the protection mechanism prevents them
from being modified) -- and a problem with registry entries would be
corrected by the procedure.

All I can think is that there is some outside influence ( another program
running, proxy client or ..??)
