Hi all,

I've used netmeeting before using an ILS and it worked
fine. I no longer have access to that ILS and have switched
internet connection. I read I should use msn messenger. I
have been able to connect with the other party with
messenger but when I hit start net meeting they accept and
nothing happens. The IP address is my local IP from behind
the DSL modem and not the modem itself. Could it be:

Fire wall on their side
DSL on my side
Need for ILS
My bad luck

The thing I don't get is if we can msn messenger why can't
we netmeeting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks In Advance

Mark

Yes, its because you are handing out the local IP address which will
never appear on the internet (it's a private IP). You need to hand out
your DSL router's IP address instead. Unfortunately Messenger doesn't
know anything about that IP ;-o

Because messenger is 'reflected' off microsoft's servers - if they go
down, you are offline. There's no point to point connection between
messenger programs. You might notice this if you get 'signed out', all
you r contacts go offline as well, since they are listed on the MS
servers, not as dircet contacts from your machine.

Well, www.fresh-toast.net quite often works even for DSL routers
because it detects the endpoint of web packets (your DSL router) not
of yuor internal IP address. Of course, your friends would have to
meet you on there as well as you need to be logged in to the site.

Cheers- Neil

Hi all,

An update, thought it might help others. Searched the
internet for netmeeting and found this very helpful site:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq#12. The site suggested
the problem might be with the dsl modem. Went through the
advanced setup of the dsl modem and discovered there is a
special netmeeting seting. Called up the phone company and
went through the settings. Set the netmeeting IP to lan.50
and reconfigured my machine to static IP assignment and
set my machine IP to lan.50 Went to whatismyip.com and got
the ip address of the dsl modem. Contacted the other party
and gave them the dsl modem IP and they called by IP.
Couldn't get the desktop sharing to work but app sharing
was fine so left it at that.

Hope this helps.
