I've used netmeeting before using an ILS and it worked

nothing happens. The IP address is my local IP from behind
the DSL modem and not the modem itself. Could it be:

Yes, its because you are handing out the local IP address which will
never appear on the internet (it's a private IP). You need to hand out
your DSL router's IP address instead. Unfortunately Messenger doesn't
know anything about that IP ;-o

Because messenger is 'reflected' off microsoft's servers - if they go
down, you are offline. There's no point to point connection between
messenger programs. You might notice this if you get 'signed out', all
you r contacts go offline as well, since they are listed on the MS
servers, not as dircet contacts from your machine.

Well, www.fresh-toast.net quite often works even for DSL routers
because it detects the endpoint of web packets (your DSL router) not
of yuor internal IP address. Of course, your friends would have to
meet you on there as well as you need to be logged in to the site.
