Application Sharing not working |
|
|
I am using Netmeeting 3.01 on XP Home.
The problem: Application sharing will not work (greyed out) when
going through router (see specifics below):
Specifics:
-- If application sharing WITHIN my home network, Sharing will work
fine.
-- If application sharing between my network and the outside, going
directly through the cable modem (no router), sharing will work fine.
-- If application sharing between my network and the ouside, going
through the router, SHARING DOES NOT WORK.
Other:
-- Video/audio WORKS in ALL cases above!
-- Router: Linksys WRT54GS, v1.1
-- Tried setting DMZ to bypass the router, but that did not work.
Please help

I presume that the router has a built in H.323 alg then (some Linksys
routers did/do have that feature) -- else two way audio/video would not be
possible without use of the dmz.

Haven't heard that problem before. I can't imagine how the router could
affect this (with the grayed selection of the function). What exactly is
grayed out and when? Are all other data functions are usable (chat, file
transfer, whiteboard)?
You should be able to host a meeting and start sharing before the call is
connected -- I presume you can do that? What happens in this case.

Normally NetMeeting calls are really two calls in parallel -- an H.323
audio/video one and a T.120 data call.
It is possible to have a deliberate call where one part is connected while
that other is not ( a data only call will result from a "secure" call for
instance), an audio/video only call can result from a call through an H.323
gatekeeper or can be forced by policy or calling parameters.
A T.120 port (tcp 1503) blockage ( by a firewall for instance) could result
in an audio/video only call.
So what you are seeing -- being in a call - i.e. audio/video connected,
while the data tools indicate "not in a call" is not unprecedented.

You might want to try this. It worked for me when I was having the same problem.
I was able to get sharing to work from XP Pro to XP Home through a Linksys router.
I think what fixed it was doing a windows update. I went to Custom and saw several non-critical Software, Optional updates available. One of them was called Windows Media Connect, along with 2 XP and 1 Outlook update. I installed them and had my sister do the same. She had 5 items listed and installed them all, not sure what the others were.
Anyway we tried to connect again and Sharing worked. I notice too that the initial "call" connected faster. Before the "waiting for response" message stayed up for a minute or so, and then went away. There was no error message but it seemed like it was timing out since it took so long, even though we both showed that we were "in a call"
Hope this helps someone.
