Hi,
Not sure if any other users have had this problem...

I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with WinXP SP2, 512M RAM PentiumM 1.6GHz.

Whenever I use netmeeting and close it, my entire computer slows down -
if I click on Start button or any of the menu options it takes a
noticeable amt of time before I can see the menulist. When I looked at
the Task Manager, clicking anything basically makes either
iexplorer.exe (if open) or explorer.exe to hog all the CPU resources.

I have checked my computer for spyware, virus and even had everything
reinstalled but the problem still persists but I have narrowed it down
to the use of Netmeeting. Currently my only solution is to reboot.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what is causing the problem and how
I can fix it?

Thanks

I don't know what the issue might be -- I have seen a similar report here
though ( maybe it was you ?). I can't think how NetMeeting could have this
effect.

What happens if you use the Task Manager and kill the task that is
apparently the problem? Does the high cpu usage stop?

NetMeeting does cause all running programs to repaint the screen on entry
and exit ( I think the root reason is a direct x initialization). Perhaps
something is making this process go awry -- do you have the latest graphics
drivers for your laptop?

The tasks in question are iexplorer.exe (which kills internet explorer
if open), the next one that gets affected in explorer.exe or
winlogon.exe. Killing either shuts down windows.

I did check another forum where a similar porblem was encountered with
media player (i think) and the fix was something in the registry. I
wasnt sure how to delete the registry though - i.e. do I delete the
value or the entire folder?

Killing IE should definitely not shut down windows. Killing explorer should
not shut down windows either (but the task bar will not be present). You
can restart "explorer" using the file --> new task run --> explorer in Task
Manager.

Though the symptoms have a vague similarity -- I don't see any relation to
NetMeeting in the forum url you provided and think the problem there is
likely unrelated.

Did you seem my post regarding upgrading the graphics driver? -- do you
have the latest graphic driver for your laptop?

Thanks Brian
I am not sure how I can check if I have the latest gfx driver and how
to update it. I have an ATI Radeon 9000 card on my laptop. I tried
doing an update driver from MyComputer Properties but it could not find
anything newer. Thx

This is an IBM T41 laptop? It has standard graphics hardware?

Near as I can tell from the IBM website -- this is the latest standard
graphics driver:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-41918

Version: 8.133.2-050525a-024243C
Release Date: 2005/08/11

But you might want to confirm that.

If you have a non standard graphics setup then you might have to look
elsewhere for the driver (perhaps the ATI website?)
