I have a Small Business Server 2003 installation (Windows Server 2003). For
Windows XP clients SBS provides a very efficient way for remote users to
connect to their work PC using RDC. However this functionality doesn't
exist for W2K Pro. I was recommended to use Net Meeting's Remote Desktop
Sharing Functionality for this purpose.

How would I allow people call their PCs from remote locations. Would I have
to set up some sort of Directory server on the DC? I also have to configure
the firewall. I have seen several ports required for NM to work however I
am not interested in any of the other features such as H323, whiteboard etc.
All I want to do is to open the appropriate ports for RDS.
(I have already configured NM and can use RDS within the LAN. In other
words, all the W2K pcs have RDS activated.)

Any light on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

If you just want use RDS you can have one client accessible by forwarding
tcp 1503 from the router/firewall to the target client and calling the wan
IP of the router or firewall.

Try looking here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/default.asp

and you will find the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client for Win 98 Win2K etc.

Don't know how it works cos I haven't used it but it may be what you require.

Doug, thanks. I am aware of this download, however I am pretty sure it's
only for w2k etc. to connect to wxp or w2k server and w2k3 server.
Unfortunately I don't think it can be used the other way around.

I think you are out of luck with NetMeeting - you will need some sort of
remote control client where the calling ( and maybe listening) port can be
modified (NetMeeting only operates on tcp 1503). That way you can call the
wan IP using different ports and forward them to different clients. VNC is
one that comes to mind ( PC Anywhere as well I think). I am guessing there
are others as well.

Have your remote users establish a VPN connection to your LAN. Then call
their LAN machines with netmeeting.
