I have searched the boards and everywhere else I can find and tried
everything ..I am to the point of screaming! *S*

I have a WRT54G Linksys Router with a Perm IP Addy

I have the Audio and Video work with Netmeeting which was the problem at
first but now it seems that file sharing only works half the time and
there is no rhyme or reason to what makes it work and what doesn't.

I have my DMZ set I have tried port forwarding with ports 1503, 1731,
1720, and 1024-65535 with TCP and UDP where Microsoft says each one is TCP
and UDP. I have also tried Port Triggering. So many different websites
say to do it one way and then another says to do it a different *S*

I use Netmeeting on a daily basis so it would be helpful to find a fix.

I also have bought a BEFW11S4 because I was told it would work where the
other router wouldn't *Same Problems* I Have tried Tech Support with
Linksys and ended up giving up.

This has been a 3 month process would appreciate any help.

Thank You in advance

I am not sure what you mean by "file sharing" -- are you referring to file
transfer or application sharing? Are you sure that whatever is preventing
this is router related? When this "file sharing" is not possible can you
perform other data functions? Whiteboard? Chat? What do you see when this
function doesn't work -- a message of some kind perhaps?

There is a phenomenon that happens sometimes in call connection where the
data portion connects later than the audio/video part of the call(normal).
Sometimes this connection happens much later ( or fails altogether). I am
not totally sure of the cause of the total failure ( some sort of built in
timeout I am guessing) but it seems to exacerbated when one end of the call
is on a low speed internet connection (like dial up).I have found that
unsetting the "Automatically send/receive video at the start of the call"
checkboxes and waiting until data connection happens, then manually
starting video helps(at least it appears anecdotally to help).

There is no need to do port forwarding and set the dmz and on some routers
that will cause problems. Port triggering strategies have always seemed too
complicated for me so I have never tried.

All data functions ( file transfer, application sharing, whiteboard and
chat) use tcp 1503 (T.120 protocol).

Audio/video uses tcp 1720 to establish the call and negotiated udp ports
for audio/video transfer(H.323 protocol).

TCP 1731 is not used.

The usual strategy employed when behind a NAT for full NetMeeting function
(espcially two way audio/video which NAT causes problems with) is to use
the DMZ function only (no port forwarding of the NetMeeting port set should
be in place -- it could confuse and disable some functions in some
routers). Some routers with built in H.323 proxies do not need port
forwarding of any kind to support outgoing audio/video calls and allow full
function incoming calls with only tcp 1720 and 1503 forwarded.

I am not totally sure but I think that router has a built in H.323 proxy.
To confuse things though this H.323 proxing did not work with all versions
of firmware. The first thing I would do is confirm that you have the latest
firmware (which I believe does correctly support the H.323 proxy function
in your router or did in the BEFSR41).

To setup the router:

The first thing I would try is with no forwarding or dmz settings on the
router to make an outgoing call. If it has full audio/video both ways then
the router has a built in H.323 proxy. In this case I would forward only
txp 1503 and tcp 1720 to see if incoming calls are full supported -- if not
than try the dmz set to the required machine to get incoming call support.

If the router has no H.323 support then setting the dmz is the only
practical strategy I can think of (others have tried port triggering and
apparently been successful but I do not recommend it) for support of full
audio/video calls in both incoming and outgoing calls. Use of a personal
firewall at the dmz machine is strongly recommended.

If only data calls are required, all routers should support outgoing calls
with no change and incoming calls by forwarding tcp 1503.

I am guessing there is no H.23 Support on the router *although that was the
purpose I had bought it was because the Sales Person told me it did*

I do have filesharing now though (Shakes head one configuration I have no
filesharing and the other I have no video thinks my pc wants thrown out
the window giggles!"

I have no Video/Voice with the Suggestion that you recommended

So I am going to try just DMZ without forwarding...the problems I have ran
into is with DMZ is the need for a Firewall is there any Personal Firewalls
that can be purchased that are Netmeeting friendly for Incoming Calls (I
use netmeeting with people that are on a strong cooperate network that
can't be disabled so I have to get incoming calls since they can't accept
incoming.

I had looked into a couple before and kept running into the only accepted
outgoing calls.

Thank you so much for your time. You have been a huge help so far.

I don't know specifically whether the router you mention has such support
but I assume you have the latest firmware for the router?

All purchasable/downloadable software firewalls that I know of and the XP
firewall have provisions that allow programs to act as servers or
exceptions and accomodate NetMeeting.

What operating system are you running? If XP then I suggest using the XP
SP2 firewall, else Zone Alarm free version(which I haven't used for a while
but I am pretty sure will do the job --

NetMeeting has to be configured as an exception (or allow to act as a
server) to allow incoming calls.
