"Directory" registering |
|
|
In trying to use NetMeeting, I try e-mail addresses and get the
error window, about "Not in Directory". Where can we find instructions
about getting into a directory? IP addresses work, but they
require some extra effort for some people.....
Thanks. |

Email addresses as calling addresses for NetMeeting are only useful in very
limited situations (where both users are logged into the same ILS server).
The requirements are usually only met on private corporate networks with
private ILS servers.

http://www.meetingbywire.com/NetMeeting101.htm has information on call
initiation.

Calling direct by IP address is probably the only reasonable way of using
NetMeeting these days.

Thank you, Brian. We have found IP addresses usable.
Thanks for the other comments. Two of us registered with
MSN Messenger and it seems to be a practical way to go.
eASY TO DOWNLOAD AND SIGN UP, TOO.

I don't think the current Msn Messenger supports NetMeeting call initiation
(for sure not on XP).

I'm lurking here for a moment. I'm going to try working |
with MSN Messenger and not NetMeeting at all for a while.
Other people do it that way, and so I'll have one less package
involved in the processes. Messenger has its way of initiating a call.
My advice to all who want to experiment in this field, is that
IP addresses are quite useful. But e-mail addresses are fixed and
everybody surely knows his own e-mail address......

Should we be talking in a different group then? Is there a
group for 'Messenger'?
The group microsoft.public.messaging seems to be applicable
but very sparsely populated.

microsoft.public.msn.messenger
microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger
for the two flavours of Messenger

No -- establishing all messenger connections require access to a server
(either the Messenger server for Msn Messenger or optionlly a purchasable
LCS server for Windows Messenger).

I'm getting more familiar with MSN Messenger, and like so many |
packages, it tries very hard to do things for me.....including
things I don't want it to do. I don't want it starting whenever
I boot up in Windows. I don't want its e-mail system. And I'm
having difficulty finding where to disengage things I don't want.
I know that the title of this group includes 'netmeeting', Brian,
