I need a reference for the callback feature for my thesis, i e
security by having the modem call back. Would anybody happen to know
when this feature first appeared? I'm unable to find useful
information about this on the WWW or in article databases. Any help
would he greatly appreciated.

Kind regards, Magnus

I have a catalog from Feb 1988 that shows at least 2 modem models
with callback security. One is the "Anchor Automation Secure 12",
a Bell 212 compatible stand-alone that "stores up to 64
password/callback combinations in battery backed memory". Priced
at US$499.

The other is a multiple-modem chassis/nest, the "Microcom HDMS"
system could be configured with up to 192 modem cards, "with a
security callback option that can be configured for fixed or
variable callback, or pass thru access, any of which can be
programmed on a per user basis".

Vendors of the time (mid 1980's on) such as Racal-Milgo,
Motorola/Codex, UDS, etc also introduced models with callback.

There were also add-on boxes that could provide this function for
an existing modem.

Since this feature pre-dates the rise of the Internet's
popularity, I am not surprised that subject matter would be hard
to find. I find this to be true regarding many technical subjects
that were noteworthy prior to the mid-1990's but became "old news"
or "well understood" after that.

I would suggest trying to find a library with trade publications
dating from the late 1980's (there was a magazine called "Data
Communications" that was popular at the time.) for articles, ads
etc.

Good Luck, and hope this helps some,
Reed
