POOR performance with netmeetin and HIGH speed, sp2?? |
|
|
I have dsl at my home (with not the greatest connection speeds, but it works).
I have been running netmeeting with family and friends (all dsl or cable
connections) fine for as long as I can remember.
I was asked by another friend to netmeeting with him. I have never before
connected with him. When we did, it seemed to take a while to connect, but
we did connect.
When he shared his desktop (or single window for that matter), I do see what
he shares. However, it takes a while to display. Also, when he gives me
control - ANYTHING I do takes up to several minutes (best case) to see a
response.
His dsl connections are excellent.
The only thing I can think of is that he is running SP2 while ALL other
people I have connected with are SP1 or win98.
I found Microsoft document: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/878451 which
talks about Remote desktop sharing and SP2.
From what I can tell from this article I would think that I wouldn't get ANY
sharing to work on his pc.
So I am wondering if I should have him (a VERY NOVICE computer user) apply
this fix?
Any thoughts out there..
Thanks |

AFAIK there is nothing SP2 that would cause the symptoms you see. There is
an issue with the "QoS Packet Scheduler" but as far as I know it affects
only audio/video. http://radio.weblogs.com/0127028/2004/10/18.html#a215 has
information on disable it (as I said I don't think it can affect data
functions but if you want to try -- it really doesn't do any harm to shut
it off in normal non corporate settings).
I am guessing it is something in the network path between you causing the
problem (temporary router overload, an over subscribed upstream path or ..)

This fix is for unattended RDS so I don't think is an issue. The fact that
you connect in a "normal" call and are able to share his desktop means this
fix is not in play.

Brian,
Thanks... I found out the info on RDS after I posted. I agree, doesn't apply
here.
My friend is directly on the internet with NO router or other hardware. He
is running fibre from his street. I am on a router, but then again I can
connect to family members (not on routers) and other friends (router).
I am curious what is so different about this issue. It is incredibly SLOW.
I mean it takes SEVERAL minutes from the time I do something, until it
responds back on my pc (on his it is immediate).
Any thoughts..

Thanks.. Soon after I posted this, I realized RDC wasn't in play here.
So what makes this one person's connection so bad? He is not on any firewall
or router. He is running fibre from the street.
I can connect fine with other family members/friends (both with routers and
none). What makes his situation so SLOW that when I connect and click on
something SEVERAL minutes go by before I see it on my end (instant on his
end).
Anything I can do to troubleshoot??
Thanks

"Fibre from the street" -- not exactly sure what that means --
cable/dsl/satellite residential broadband I am aware but I haven't seen any
residential isps running fibre to residents. Who is the isp?

Using a program like Ping Plotter (http://www.pingplotter.com/) you might
be able to spot a router causing a problem but even if you did -- it is
likely outside your control and short of one or the other changing ISPs it
is unlikely you could do much.
