Router no longer forwarding on any port |
|
|
Warning: I'm a bit of a networking novice. I know just enough to get me
by, but I'm experiencing a problem that I can't solve. I've got a
NetGear MR-314 wireless router acting as a firewall to my local
network. I'm currently using Verizon DSL, and I'm attempting to set up
port forwarding on port 8080 for use with a webcam. I've used port
forwarding lots of times in the past for various purposes (http, ssh,
ftp, etc.). However, for some reason my router will not forward on any
port now. Admittedly, the router is showing its age, but surely this
one feature wouldn't fail would it? I hadn't been using forwarding for
quite some, then I moved and got a different ISP, now forwarding no
longer works. I tried upgrading the routers firmware to the latest, but
this made no change. Should I just throw in the towel and pick up a new
router? Is there anyway my problem is related to the ISP? This seems
doubtful since everything works fine if I remove the router and
directly connect a machine (with the webcam) to the modem. |

How are you testing this? From a remote network or from the local LAN to
know its not working?

What operating system are you running? I had the same problem with xp
sp2 and it was the windows built in firewall that was causing the
problem. To check if you have it enabled you can go to the security
center in the control panel. |

I'm running OSX. I've tried forwarding with and without my local
firewall running. |

Ok, so you have opened a port, and redirected to your workstation, and |
have tried to connect on that port from the outside and it doesn't work.
Does the connection time out or is it refused? I assume you have tested
from a host on your internal lan to the destination port and that works,
to be certain the point of failure if the router.
Have you ever heard of nmap? Run nmap from the outside if you can on
your public IP. By the way, how do you know your public IP? Are you
using DDNS software to track your IP, is it static, or do you just track
your current ip on the fly? This site:
http://scan.sygate.com/probe.html
Will also do a port scan for you (connect from your internal LAN). One
of the things nmap will tell you is if a port is open, closed, or
filtered. Some times your ISP will block certain ports (these will show
up as filtered) although I have never heard of an isp blocking 8080).
Try putting your host directly on the Internet and bypassing the Netgear
box completely. Now are you able to connect from the outside to your port?? |

Henry, thanks for all of the info. I tried removing the router when I
first encountered this trouble, and I was able to connect to the
machine on port 8080 with no trouble from outside of my lan. I've also
been able to successfully connect to the machine from within my lan.
I'm using a dyndns.org supplied domain name, and my IP is being updated
by the router itself (this feature is working fine).
If I remember correctly, the connection times out when attempting to
connect. I don't have it running currently, but I can verify this later
if it will help in solving the problem.
I'm not familiar with either of the tools you mentioned, so I'll give
those a try and see what I come up with. Thanks for your help! |

Re: Router no longer forwarding on any port |

Well, just moments before I walked out the door on my way to buy a new
router, it started working. I tried scanning my ports both locally and
remotely and everything looked as it should. Port 8080 was open (80 was
blocked, I expected that), but still no one could connect to the port
remotely. Then I turned forwarding off and added my webcam host as the
default DMZ server just to see if it would work. It worked fine
remotely, but I didn't want the machine to be in front of the firewall
so I removed the DMZ settings and reinstated the forwarding. Ever since
it's been working like a charm.
It's as if setting up the DMZ server somehow activated the forwarding
settings. I'm clueless as to why it works now, but it works. For some
reason my domain isn't resolving within my LAN, but I guess that's not
related to forwarding.
Thanks again for the help everyone. :) |
