VOIP via Bluetooth? |
|
|
I want to use my Plantronics headset / Belkin USB dongle for wire-free voice
chat via NetMeeting. The Bluetooth installation seems to be ok -- I can
hear system sounds on the headset, and I can record my voice using the
Windows sound recorder -- but when I run the NetMeeting audio setup wizard,
while the listening part works, the mic setup produces an error message to
the effect that my sound card doesn't support a microphone (it does -- it's
a SB Live! Value card with Creative's currently posted drivers for Win XP).
I have also tried ICQ's VOIP device, which has a similar setup routine. The
setup works fine, but I haven't yet succeeded in making it work in practice,
although I haven't had many opportunities to try it.
Is this a known problem? Am I overlooking something obvious? Can anybody
help?
Thanks. |

NetMeeting seems to attempt to use the sound card mic interface in ways that
aren't that common and some sound cards/mic interfaces don't support.
Sometimes even though the sound card mic interface is reported as non
functioning in the tuning wizard it may still be basically functional in
real use. Have you tried to use your setup in a call?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have now tried, but sadly to no avail.
I have also tried booting into an old installation of Windows 98SE on this
same machine. This time the setup wizard worked properly, insofar as it
didn't tell me I had no microphone. But there was no sound at all, either
in or out. But it's a very shaky, unstable installation of W98 with its own
ideas of how to behave. It does suggest however that my problem in Win XP
has to do with the soundcard drivers, don't you think?
I'd be very interested to hear if anybody has had success with Bluetooth on
ANY voice-over-internet program. |

Yes probably -- have you looked for newer ones?

I'm currently using the ones presently available for XP from Creative's
website. I have also tried WinXP's built-in ones for this card (and looked
for Microsoft updates), but the problem remained, so I reinstalled the
Creative drivers. They at least offer some minimal support for the card's
quadraphonic capability, though not nearly as nicely as the Win98 drivers
did.
And that, I think, is the root of the trouble -- the SB Live! card was great
kit when it was released in pre-XP days, but has been badly supported by
Creative since then. Fortunately, I am on the verge of assembling a new
go-faster (than 400MHz) computer, and have been giving some thought to what
soundcard I should have. The SB Live! 5.1 looks affordable, and should be
XP-aware.
Until then, I guess I'll have to try persuading a number of friends to sign
up to Windows Messenger.
Thanks for your help. |
