Netmeeting and MSN Messenger |
|
|
In these groups, for Webcam communication, we were
advised to go to NSN Messenger 6.2 .... and we did, and 2-way
Webcam is working fine. But we can get no audio either way.
It just may be that NetMeeting is still there, in the way
somehow.
I went to uninstall it, but can't find it via Add/Remove programs,
and not in the Microsoft list under Add/Remove.
Please, how do I take NetMeeting out of the picture? And as an
aside, any advice about the audio in MSN Messenger would be welcome. |

NetMeeting is still there -- but it is not affecting your Messenger
audio/video.

NetMeeting cannot be removed -- it is part of the protected file system and
cannot be deleted, removed or renamed. Parts of NetMeeting are required for
Messenger operation.

The most likely cause for lack of audio connection in Messenger is that one
or both of the parties is behind a NAT or firewall without UPnP NAT
traversal features.
Is either party behind a router or firewall?

Okay, Brian, you've convinced me. We will just allow NetMeeting to rest |
quietly in place, since it isn't bothering MSN Messenger. We are working
on the UPnP compatibility. In my post to Efrain I explained that
my ISP last night took over my computer and upgraded my DSL modem to
be UPnP compatible, and later today we'll try some more video+audio.
Thank you. |

DSL will become available for me later this year. Because of hoped
for improvement over dialup for video conferencing applications I plan
to subscribe. What do you mean by UPnP? Should I enquire about
that before subscribing?

Msn Messenger uses a strategy called UPnP NAT traversal to allow incoming
and outgoing audio/video calls ( and some other features) to function when
the user is behind a NAT. NATs are generally routers or firewalls. If your
DSL provider puts you behind a NAT ( some supply routers or modems that are
NATs) the NAT must support UPnP NAT traversal for Messenger to be able to
do anything (other than simple text messaging).
I would ask the DSL provider about both NAT and UPnP NAT traversal.

Frank, I wish I could explain what UPnP means, but I can't |
They brought it up, I checked, my
modem didn't have it, my ISP (BellSouth) upgraded my
modem so it has it.
When you go DSL, I suggest making sure they do it
the first time. |
