Hello,

I recently purchased a used Bay Stack 450-12T (firmware version 1.47 -
software version 3.1.0.22) from a reputable ebay tech hardware dealer
for a good price but I have run into a serious problem. I cannot for the
life of me or the distributor for that matter, get a password to work.

I have called Nortel but they have given me a ridiculous dollar figure
on correcting the problem. Does anyone have a clue as to what the
default password might me for this unit with the firmware and software
that is currently installed on it.

If not does anyone know how to possibly reset it to a default state.
Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

There is a backdoor password, but it is dependant on the MAC address
or serial number in a manner that no-one has reverse-engineered and
published.

There is no built-in facility to reset to the default state without the
password.

The only way I know of to reset the password without paying Nortel $$$$
is to arrange the cooperation of someone with a Baystack 450 and a
pair of cascade modules. You set your switch to be something other than
unit one, and you put the cascade modules in both and cable them together
with the cascade cables. Power the devices up, connect to the other
person's unit (either via the console or via telnet), and command
that the switch settings be saved "Yes, Entire Stack". Once you have
done that, the password that they had on their switch will be written
into your switch, and you can disconnect the cascade, go in via the
console to your switch, log in using their password, and change the
password to whatever you want.

"Meme" is self-referential; memes exist if and only if the "meme" meme
exists. "Meme" is thus logically a meta-meme; but until the existance
of meta-memes is more widely recognized, "meta-meme" is not a meme.

That sounds like an excellent solution Walter.
So for the price of shipping it somewhere, you can get this fixed.

Try this...

1. Reboot the switch

2. As it starts to boot, hit CTRL-C

3. When prompted, choose ' i ' - choose YES

4. When prompted, choose ' a ' - choose YES

the device will then boot from the agent code and come up to the menu.

...see if that helps..
