Baystack 450 24t setup of IP address |
|
|
Hi People,
When trying to set an IP address on a Baystack 450 24t switch i am
encountering a very odd but no doubt easily resolved problem.
I can reset the switch to factory defaults and connect to the switch
via the Console port.
The problem is that when i attempt to configure the IP address, it
only lets me type 1 character before overwriting the last. Its a
little hard to explain but it is similar to typing characters with
INSERT switched on. On you keyboard in a normal document.
If anyone has any possible ideas i would be happy to try them.
Many Thanks for your time people

The first thing I would suggest checking is your terminal emulation
program's settings, to be sure that you do not have "hardware flow
control" set. Hardware flow control can produce some very strange
interactions with 450's!
The other thing I would suggest checking is which model of terminal
you are emulating in your terminal program. The 450 generally uses
ANSI compatible escape sequences, so a terminal type of 'ansi'
or 'vt100' or 'vt220' should usually work. I do, though, have a vague
memory that in one instance, when I was using a terminal program written
by a little-known company, that the program's vt100 emulation could
not handle some of the pages. I didn't spend any time diagnosing the
problem: I just immediately switched over to a terminal program I
knew I could trust (kermit) and proceeded with my task.
As a general statement: I have seen quite a number of Usenet reports
from people that they found Hyperterm (the terminal program that comes
with MS Windows) to be unsatisfactory for various reasons. The
strongest coherent complaint was over it's inability to produce
a true BREAK signal, but I've also seen a non-trivial number of
complaints that it's ansi/vt100 emulation "sucks". I haven't used it
enough to have a personal opinion. [I have, though, had a number of
emulation glitches with MS Window's telnet program, particularily
with respect to the auto newline behaviour when a program writes
in the last column of the window -- messes up 'vi' badly.] So if you
do happen to be using HyperTerm to access the 450 serial port,
then the first thing I would suggest is changing terminal programs
and seeing if that helps.

use another terminal emulator and see if that helps.
Must use VT100 emulation for best results.

I assume you're using Hyperterminal. If so then first
download & install Hyperterminal Private Edition from
www.hilgraeve.com. Next, change your terminal settings
from terminal type "Auto" to manual setting of "VT100".
Also set the flow control to software (xon/xoff).
Your problems should then be over.

Use the <TAB> key rather than the arrow key to move between prompts (lines).
Don't know why this occurs sometimes, then not others, but...

I have always had BAD luck with HYPERTERM - so I downloaded and
installed HYPERACCESS and it works great on all models of Nortel
switches. I have used it on the 250 series, 350, 420, 425, 450, 460,
470, 480, 5510 series and more...
