Like everyone else, I have a synoptics 28115 that I acquired waaay
back when. Originally when I purchased it, I wanted to learn a) how
to use a managed switch and b) get a nice 100mb connect in the house!
After using it for several months I put it away during a move and
received some nifty, smaller new switches as house warming gifts.
Great! Its been sitting in a closet for the past 3 years and now that
I have a /27 to my name I want to put this bad boy to use.

I plugged in cable that should be good into the service port and
pluged that into my rj-45 to DB9 converter, fired up hyperterm
9600/8/none/1/hardware and boom nothing happens. I tried another
converter and com2 with no luck. I tried manually changing the IP
address on the menu however it says "READ ONLY VALUE" and I cannot
change it (same for gateway, subnet etc). I assume maybe it's because
it expects it to be DHCP only? (a setting that can only be set/changed
from the service port - I have no idea just thinking.)

I read through some of the manual and learned a lot about this device
however it doesn't help my situation any! Am I using the correct
cable? I don't know for sure - in theory this is a 'terminal' cable
but I could have the wrong one. Maybe I need to check out post:

In any event, is there some kind of hw override that will allow me to
completely reset the thing (even if it removes the latest image which
is 28k2116 I believe)? Anything I can do at all what so ever!? Any
assistance is appreciated.

Thank you

Yup,

this cable pinout looks good to me. Oh wait, this is from me. :-)

The cable is very particular, I think some apple printers used the
same cable. I wouldn't recommend Hyperterminal either, get something
else in shareware, but not that aweful HyperTerminal SW.

Pls. remember that the box does not autonegotiate - you will have to
set up things manually. Keep in mind how old this baby is. If the pain
gets too bad, you can get a Netgear switch doing more for only a few
bucks, I believe:-(

Hope this helps,
Markus

The only way to default the switch is through the console.

The following simple pinout straight from the 28k manual works
for terminals with flow control disabled.

RJ-45f -> Signal DB-9f Signal Notes
1 blue -
2 orange -
3 black rcv 3 xmt
4 red -
5 green gnd 5 gnd
6 yellow xmt 2 rcv
7 brown -
8 white or gray

Note flow control is disabled, so your console software
should be set to 9600,8,n,1 and no flow control.

I usually also recommend that the Hyperterminal issued
with Windows installations be replaced with Hyperterminal
Private Edition from www.hilgraeve.com/htpe. Particularly
on NT/W2k/XP type systems this solves a LOT of problems.
