8600 not booting from saved boot config |
|
|
We have several 8600's running 3510 code.
We are tryin to install a new one. When we set bootconfig options and save
from the normal runtime code and then do a reboot we get an error on startup
that says failed to read the /flash/boot.cfg file (it does exist) then we
have to break into the Monitor, Can save from there reboot and it loads the
file just fine, save from the runtime code and fails again. We can not get
our boot configurations saved. Also tried to save to PCMCIA flash, deleted
the one on the internal flash and it did try and load the one on the PCMCIA
card but failed to read also.
I can not remember if when we upgraded the other 8600's if we even tried to
save any boot config options and have to reboot afterwards, been running
ever since the we upgraded them and can not take them down to test it out
for now.
Could we have a BUD infested verision of code, anyone know of any known
issues related to that version for this issue ?
Thanks,

The software is actually quite good. That stream is up to
v3.5.3 now.
How about simply deleting the boot.cfg file and building
a new one?
There are several other things to suggest. If you want to
know root cause of course, open a support case and submit
the file to them.

Re: 8600 not booting from saved boot config |

I did try and deleted and start from a default boot.cfg and still had the
problem.
We found what the problem was.
One of the techs did not complete the boot monitor upgrade properly when
installed the new code. I had just assumed he followed the instructions
completely. When I reveiwed the release notes he did not remember doing the
step to program the new boot code, He put the code on the flash bott missed
the step to program into memory, We did it and all works great now.
He had upgraded our other 8600's corectly but tried this one from memory and
missed a step.
I always stress going through all release notes and instructions completely,
Even after being in this feild for 20 years now I still do it, Been burned
too many times before myself.
Another lesson learned, Again. Always best not to asssume know every step
from memory, Follow all steps, And never asssume someone else has done
everything correctly either.
We are setting up the Alteon WSM and SAM modules into our production 8600.
We have already fully tested in another test unit at Nortel on that code
with the version of code we are using on theb WSM. We found some issues with
a few newer versions of code but not sure if was a setup issue or not. We
are also setting up another seperate pre-production test 8600, WSM and SAM,
Then we plan on testing the latest codes, I think 3.7.0.0. is out and
10.3.7.0.0 for the WSM.
Thanks for the help and sugestions.
