Max,
It really depends on the picture quality that you want. You can use a
56Kbps modem and do videoconferencing if you like. I don't find the picture
size and frame rate acceptable, but it is certainly better than nothing.
For better quality video, 384Kbps, 748Kbps and higher are common.

In practice, for a 384 Kbps IP VDC is a normal domestic ADSL enough ?
People who make IP professional vidconf, what kind of access they have ?

It depends on the country. In the UK ADSL is generally a contended medium
that has a very vague (if any) service gauruntee. My experience is that
anything above 192Kb/s over an ADSL internet connection does not provide a
sustainable, acceptable quality YMMV.

In general businesses tend to re-engineer their corporate WAN to support QoS
or use an overlay network that provides the relevant SLA metrics to sustain
a high quality [1] video conference.
If you have a specific business requirement for multiple locations then i
can provide more specific assistance, just reply to group for now.

[1] High quality / business quality is generally considered to be 384K or
more often 768K. Modern systems can provide an impressive TV-like experience
at these kind of speeds. |

Solid advice. These guys are right on Max. If you're in the US the
average DSL or even cable download speed is around 768Kbps or higher.
No problem there but most upload speeds are limited to max 256Kbps.
Which isn't terrible video (depending on who you ask) but as was
mentioned above the most common rate is 384Kbps and is generally
accepted as minimum standard quality video across the industry.
So really no matter where you live it's up to you to ensure that your
ADSL plan clearly states that you're getting a minimum of 384Kbps down
and upload speeds.

Thanks a lot.
If I have understood, is the best to find out
an ADSL with simmetric speed 512K ?
No other special requirement ? |
