Got a new Speedstream 5200 modem from my ISP.

It came with a "configuration program" on a CD. The program wants to run
with Administrator privileges on my W2K computer. I don't like to run
unknown programs with Administrator privileges, so I didn't; who knows
what it would mess up in my OS settings.

What is there to configure anyway? A modem is just a modem, isn't it? It
seems to be working just fine, without any configuration.

Am I missing anything by not running the config program from the CD?

If your 5200 is just a modem, then there isn't much to configure, but
you may need to be running PPPoE software on your XP system.
Configuring that does take admin privileges.

If your modem is a router, or even a partially crippled router, you
may need to configure PPPoE or PPPoA parameters on the modem. There
is probably a web interface to the modem for setting this.

If there is a forum for your ISP at dslreports.com, then check there,
as there may be a FAQ with info on setup.
