i have a hp laptop running windows xp and have a problem with the internal
modem
when i go to device manager it reports that the modem is installed
correctly - and when i test the modem it responds ok, but when i try to
connect to the internet i get a no dial tone response
i have tried different phone lines, different internet accounts and
different phone cables but with the same response - i have also installed an
external modem and this works fine with the different phone lines, internet
accounts and phone cables
is it possible that the socket where you plug in the phone cable is damaged
which means that as far as the computer is concerned the modem is
functioning ok?

had a look at the modem log and there is a line that says the following

DSR is low while initializing the modem. Verify modem is on.

any help would be much appreciated

Yes, that's possible.

This seems to indicate there is a problem with the modem. It could be

bad drivers or a defective modem. I suggest you post your whole log.

If this is a built in modem and you did a new XP install, then what
modem drivers did you use, if any? Ideally, they would be XP drivers
from HP.

You need to talk directly to the modem using AT command set and query it as
to how it is set up and what it is doing. Use a terminal program like
Hyperterminal (should be on your computer). Type ATZ <enter> Type AT and
modem should respond OK. If you don't see anything, then type ATE1 .. then
AT .. then you should see OK if the modem is hooked up correctly.

Then type ATDT and the phone number of your ISP and see if the modem dials
out. If it does, then the modem is fine and you have something mucked up in
your XP settings for the modem. If the modem doesn't respond to any of the
above, then maybe something is wrong with it or the socket.
