Dual modem questions |
|
|
My newsgroup server doesn't deliver 100% of each group, so I may have posted
this Q before, but it just doesn't show up.
I'm in dialup hell .. 28.8K is as fast as it gets. Any other form of
connection is way more costly, so I figure that I should explore the
possibilities of using a dual modem and two land lines to double my connect
speed. The web is so graphic intensive lately, that it just take forever to
d/l a new page, and so many pages insist on a total refresh, won't cache.
So the question(s):
1) What brands make a good dual modem?
2) What kind of software is needed to use the modem?
3) Does this require an ISP that allows/supports dual modems?
Thanks |

Any 2 modems that work well with your machine and ISP |

Windows 9x on has native support for multi-link PPP. See below for 2 |
ISP teaming software.

Yes, you need an ISP that supports multi-link PPP |
If you want to use 2 separate PPP connections from 2 different ISPs
and team them together for web browsing (won't really help with file
downloads and newsgroups), then look for software that does it.
There's one called midpoint teamer here I found:

There may be other teaming software. Gary E

In many cases, the cost of an additional line plus a dual or two modems,
is not much less than the cost of some other high-speed connection,
DSL/Cable/Wireless. Plus you always have an open phone line available.
Check around and see what is available in your area. Good luck.

DSL/Cable/Wireless, WHAT'S THAT! Never going to happen for me, and I'm only
4miles from town. |

Nothing else is available to me, except satellite. Two land lines and a
couple modems is way less expensive than that, because it uses a phone line
to work as well, so add that to the total cost. Many modems work with
call-waiting now, so receiving calls while online is do-able nowadays.
