Netmeeting video quality |
|
|
I have Philips PCVC675k webcam and I want to use netmeeting in a
university network in Italy. In Italy all universities are connected
to a unique network and both the two places I want to connect have a
100 Mbps connection.
If I use netmeeting the images I receive and I send are quite blur,
noisy, while audio and file sharing are quite good.
Years ago, I tried between two 56k connections and the resulting image
was quite similar. It was ok for a 56k connection but it isn't for a
100 Mbps one! I thought I would had quite a perfect image, but it
isn't at all.
So, assuming I tried all the basic options in Netmeeting, how can I
improve the image quality? Do exixt different codecs for netmeeting?
Do you suggest some free alternatives to Netmeeting assuming I must
use windows (too complicated to install linux)?
I thank you all for your attention and I hope I'll get your help.
Sorry for cross-posting.

I did some tests with a Hauppauge TV card (cheap!) of which I used the
video input - to which I connected a quality video camera (PAL CVBS).
The picture quality is near-broadcast at ~700 Kb/s, but the framerate
does not get above ~ 10 FPS (estimation) even on a 2 GHz PC.
Tests were done at a LAN, Quality of service outside the LAN may spoil
things.

What are you using for video capture? software / hardware .

Firs of all thank you to both of you for your attention.
Hemm... This is a difficult question. Well, It is a USB webcam and I
insalled the software Philips provided with the camera. I use
netmeeting as it is (I need to be in common/standard/default
situation). I think it should be a via software video capture.

I have recently set up a hole in our firewall to allow netmeeting
traffic through to an individual PC. I feel that the TCP setup is
secure however the dynamic UDP transport is not only a vulnerability
but it is a hit or miss mechanism for transporting audio and video
info. Do you think that a dedicated video conferencing server with
appropriate authentication is the way to approach netmeeting. We need
control over what domains can access our network for video
conferencing. PIX firewall will allow H.323 traffic, but you must
create access lists for every domain you wish to allow. I'll stop
here. All comments welcome.

Genrally, holes in the firewall will not be effectibe for netmeeting.
This is because of the complexity of the H323 protocol and the need to
negotiate dynamic (and therefore unpredictable) port ranges for
netmeeting use.
Gnomemeeting (www.gnomemeeting.org) is a suitable Linux based client,
which can have a tightly controlled port range assigned for use,
however I expect you need windows clients.
Therefore, you will need to put a H323 proxy on a bastion host in your
DMZ and carefully configure incoming calls which are placed only to
this proxy. Some proxies are OpenH323 conference server or
gratekeeper, and Dialup Audio's DUALGatekeeper program.
Hope that helps - Neil Smith.
