JWP,
Are you planning on communicating with "appliance based" codecs (ie
Polycom ViewStation, Tandberg, etc), PC based systems or both? These
considerations will have a HUGE impact on the options available to
you.
If you're using only PC based systems then you can take advantage of
the newer SIP based VTC clients out there. If you'll be communicating
with "appliance based" codecs, you'll need to find a client that can
handle H.323 (and H.264 in the future).
You might want to consider using NetMeeting for your initial tests -
While not the "best" client out there in terms of video/audio quality,
IT'S FREE!!! It will give you a good general indication of how your
"oil-field environment" will effect your "Mobile VTC" project (trust
me, you'll be surprised by the "learning curve" of actually doing
this). I've been using NetMeeting for my wireless laptop based "Mobile
VTC" projects and it's been working pretty good. I can use a wide
variety of camcorders with zoom lenses, night vision, etc...Plus I
have other benefits like being able to use the laptops VPN client to
VTC back into our network from the internet. I've tried other products
like Via Video, CuCMe, etc. but because of my environment (behind many
firewalls, talking to appliance based codecs, users who can barely
turn a "corn-puter" on, etc...) NetMeeting is still working out the
best; however I'm always searching for a better solution.
Hopefully these suggestions will help.
PS - Beware of the scummy "Snake-Oil" salesmen who will undoubtedly
try to convince you to buy their product, even though it doesn't meet
all/any of your requirements!

any help would be appreciated. My facility is a large manufacturing
facility, oil refinery 4 square miles. We have 802.11xx wireless to
many areas already. We need the ability to capture good quality video
in near- real time and transmit over wireless to our ethernet LAN. Not
sure of which camera systems would work best or at all. Webcams may
not have the image quality and zoom features we require. Another
option would be digi video cam connected to a laptop with video server
? Any help appreciated |
