Not connecting to network using CuSeeme |
|
|
I recently upgraded to cable internet access and have been trying to
video conference using CuSeeme 5.0. The problem is I'm no longer able
to connect at all. When I used AOL on dial-up the CuSeeme program
would be able to establish a connection, though there was a big
problem with me sending video streams but no problem receiving. I
should mention the connection I'm trying to make is a point-to-point
(only two people) with the other person using broadband as well. When
I load the CuSeeme program now, there is a slash across the little
icon on the tray, and when I place the cursor over the icon it says '
Not connecting to network'. I know it's not my ISP connection as I'm
having no problems accessing the internet. I don't know what network
it's referring to. I was wondering if maybe the problem has to do
with a corrupted file ?
I uninstalled AOL completely and have also uninstalled then
reinstalled CuSeeme several times. I've checked all network settings
and even uninstalled my firewall, but still the same problem. I'm
using Windows XP with all the updates. I would appreciate any help.
PS What other program would you recommend for video conferencing
between just two people?
Thanks |

You might try one or two things :
Port forwarding often works, though I have no problems with cuseeme
(using freesco + cuseeme NAT module as router), you might find the
following ports helpful forward through your NAT device :
TCP 7648
TCP 1720
UDP 1719
These could well enable you to receive an incoming call using the H323
protocol. However, your NAT dev ice or firewall might still block
these or dynamically allocated UDP ports used for carrying audio &
video traffic, Unlike netmeeting, cuseeme uses a smaller range of
ports, and you can configure which ports to use. To check this :
Tools->Preferences->Network
Then choose 'test if I am behind a NAT'
If this is the case, choose some hig-numbered ports and pick 'Ports
mode' : 'Custom local ports' if the NAT setting does not work. Then,
get your called party to use the same ports.
You can also try to use a quiet public reflector, which can overcome
some of these problems (though you might have the odd random person
dropping in). 209.74.149.2 (Queen of Sparta, conf ID 0) is usually
empty.
If you still have problems, netmeeting sometimes works, again you will
have to do port forwarding (which may not work) or examine your
router's config screens, and place your Netmeeting PC into the routers
DMZ (demilitarised zone) for the duratrion of an expected call.
You can check if your netmeeting client is accessible by visiting my
site at www.fresh-toast.net : Login and examin your user entry - if
you have a tick next to your name, you can be called from the
internet, if a question mark instead, you may possibly not be
callable.
You can also use thie fressh-toast site to do point to point calls
between netmeeting, cuseeme, intel video phone and gnomemeeting
(linux) H323 clients, and it offers the only ILS style web service
specifcally for MS Portrait, which might also be an option
http://research.microsoft.com/~jiangli/portrait for more info, or
check the discussion forum on http://www.fresh-toast.net/portrait
Hope that helps

For 2 people P2P video conference you can also use Net Meeting from
Microsoft.
