Within the past month, I have heard a couple of times that
NetMeeting will be going away. I am trying to find out if
this is true. If so, what is planned to replace
NetMeeting? When will NetMeeting be replaced or ended
with no replacement? What are the future plans for
NetMeeting? Enhancements? New releases? Roadmap?

Thanks,
Mike

I am not sure about "going away" but - NetMeeting is still delivered on all
shipping Microsoft Operating Systems. Microsoft has indicated though that
NetMeeting is being retired -- and it is sure that the next generation of
Microsoft O/S will not include NetMeeting ( Longhorn -- due in 2006).

There is no direct one to one replacement but a series of technologies and
services including MSN/Windows Messenger, LCS(Live Communications Server)
and LiveMeeting.

There are various Microsoft Research project that could still prove
"direct" replacements - Conference XP for instance but it needs very high
speed networks -- unlikely to be in the hands of normal users.

As I said Longhorn in 2006 is projected not to include NetMeeting.

Retirement

No.

New releases?

None planned -- I suppose a discovered security issue would change that.

If by "replacement" you mean a program with the same features and another
name -- no (but I don't have direct knowledge of Microsoft's plans --
anything is possible).

The general set of features that NetMeeting has is being replaced by
features in Msn Messenger (person to person video calling, application
sharing, whiteboard), LiveMeeting (multiparty application
sharing/broadcasting -- with audio and perhaps video support in the
future), and Remote Desktop ( RDS remote desktop control).

I'm very new here....bought Creative Webcam because friends liked theirs

and it is modern and supported. However, my old el-cheapo Intel PC
Camera, obsolete, totally unsupported, works right on my DSL line with
no NetMeeting. So, in a sense, NetMeeting may be discontinued, but
going for a *pay* service may not be necessary.
