WinXPSP2 Netmeeting locks up when viewing ILS directory |
|
|
I am not sure whether this started when I upgraded to SP2 or when I added a
Logitech QuickCam Messenger camera, but now every time I connect to my
companies ILS directory to find someone to connect to, Netmeeting locks up
tight shortly after the directory opens and loads the list of signed on
users (usually about 20-25 users at a time). The only way to proceed is to
kill Netmeeting from task manager.
I have tried removing and re-installing netmeeting following the directions
here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q267958 but
the problem still exists.
All other features appear to work. I can accept calls, and I can place
calls directly to known machine IP addresses, I just can't find anyone in
the directory.
Any thoughts oterh then removing SP2 (something I really don't want to do).

I forgot to mention, I have the XP firewall disabled and do not have another |
software firewall on this computer. I am behind a hardware firewall, but
Netmeeting works on Win2K boxes behind the firewall just fine, and worked on
this one until a few weeks ago.

I have no problem accessing ils directories (at least the few public ones
that I tried). Can you view other directories (http://www.netmeetinghq.com
has a list of public directories if you are looking for some to test with).
The company ILS directory you are attempting to access -- is it Win2000
based(there is an older Nt4 version)?

I know it was originally on NT4, but I am fairly certain that machine has
been upgraded to Win2K. However, I am now certain that the ILS is not the
problem. I attempted to connect to one of the ones on the page you
referenced. I am not currently connected to my corporate VPN, and the "Find
someone" page locked up right after giving me the error message that it
couldn't reach the server.
This is not a huge deal if it is not something you have seen before. I have
another machine that I can use for meetings. In fact, Netmeeting is working
fine in a Win2K virtual machine I have running under MS Virtual PC on the
same computer that is having the problem.
Thanks,

based on one of your other posts regarding an unrelated problem, I disabled
the QOS packet scheduler on my connection, and I can now use the directory.
So, thanks for your help here, even though you didn't know about the
particular problem I was experiencing.
Now my only issue is that I am supposed to use QOS when doing VoIP on my
corporate network. But I do netmeeting a lot more then VoIP.

That seems strange -- I really don't know how QoS could affect your ILS
server access. AFAIK it is only used on connection in an audio/video call.

I suppose you could switch it off and on as needed (or not needed).

Hmmm... Must have been something else that fixed it and I didn't know since
I gave up using the directory due to the problem. Anyway, all fixed now so
I am happy :)
