Force higher 56k connections? |
|
|
Hi All,
I'm using a SwannSmart Turbo 56k dial up modem with an intel chipset and am
currently recieving connection speeds averaging 40.0k. I am using the
latest drivers with the default settings from Http://www.swann.com.au
although I was wondering whether anyone would know of an AT command I could
force the modem to connect at a higher speed. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.
Thank you.
Paul. |

What is it you are trying to accomplish?
The modems automatically negotiate the optimum speed given phone line
conditions. You can't just tell the modems to go faster.

Hey Tom,
I am trying to accomplish faster connection speeds so that my modem get's
higher throughput. If that's not possible then that's kewl, just that I
used to get higher connection speeds with my previous ISP averaging 46k
instead of what I am getting now at 40.0k. Thanks a lot mate.

I see a lot of variability in my dialup connection. My ISP suggested using a
modem with the same chip set as used by the ISP. The theory was that if both
sides are the same it is more likely to connect at maximum possible speed.
Be interesting to see if you still are able to connect at the higher speed
to the old ISP. My guess is the speed reduction has more to due with
noise/attenuation of the Telco network then the change in ISP, but there is
no way to tell without an A-B comparison.
Something else to check out is try connecting the dialup modem directly to
the Telco NID test disconnect. If speed increases then inside
wiring/equipment is degrading speed.
Tough being on dialup these days so it is frustrating not to be able to
maximize speed.

Why not? I just tell my wife to go faster. (although I don't think |
she does, now that I think about it.)

How about a hardware solution:
Monitor your received bytes per second. While connected, momentarily
put a .01uf capacitor across phone line. Modem stops for 10 seconds,
then renegotiates speeds. If you are not electronically oriented, buy
a Radio Shack red LED phone line monitor - it plugs into an extension
phone connector - momentarily plug it in and remove.
I've done it also by shorting the phone line, but you have to be very
fast, else modem hangs up. Possibly plugging another phone in and
removing it may work.
The Radio Shack red LED phone line monitor works well and won't hang
up the modem even if just plugged in or removed.
Really - if you are a power dial-up downloader, this will get you a 10
to 20 percent increase in speed. Randy. |

If your modem supports TIES, then try this software trick:
"Using TIES to retrain":
http://groups.google.com/group/comp.dcom.modems/msg/a7e663c4b6639651?dmode=source&hl=en
Note that the above trick won't work if you have software compression
enabled, or if your modem uses the standard Hayes guard time. No harm
will be done in either case, though.
