Netmeeting locks up network |
|
|
I have a new PC with Windows XP SP2 and as soon as I
successfully connect to a server with Netmeeting my
dialup connection stops working completely. My browser
no longer connects to anything, and if I run a "ping"
command, it just says 'Request timed out'. As soon as
I disconnect Netmeeting from the server, my dialup
connection starts working again. Pages show up on my
browser, and the ping responses start arriving again.
I've tried disabling the Firewall completely, enabling
it with Netmeeting as an exception, and using ZoneAlarm
instead of the Windows built-in Firewall, but nothing
has solved the problem. All the settings on Netmeeting
are identical to those on my old computer which works
with no problems. Does anyone have any suggestions? |

What do you mean when you say "connect to the server". What server is this?
Does NetMeeting work(can you make and receive calls?) when you don't
"connect to the server"?

Anything unusual about this machine -- does it have a network card? Are you
connected to a LAN as well as using dialup?

Sorry, I assumed that information wasn't important since my old
computer works fine. I believe it's called a "reflector". I think
it's running a CuSeeMe server. I select the IP address from the
drop down menu in NetMeeting, and click on the button with the
telephone on it. I then hear a chime, and the display is updated
when the connection with the server is established. From that point
my dialup connection no longer sends or receives any data until I
click on the hangup button in the NetMeeting window. I have not
tried any other connections with NetMeeting, either incoming or
outgoing.

I don't know of anything unusual. It does have a builtin
network adapter on the motherboard, but it is not being
used for anything (it's unplugged). I have tried both the
internal winmodem and an external modem on COM1 with the
same problem. |

I am not sure what you mean -- NetMeeting can use two types of servers --
an ILS server -- used to locate a user and initiate a call and a Conference
server/MCU (which performs much the same service as an Cuseeme reflector
but for NetMeeting).
I don't know of any operating public MCUs though.
What is the Ip address or name of this server?

Generally the drop down address is used to initiate a call to another user.

I guess you could call a "server" but generally you have to specify a
conference to connect to as well.

And your connection to the internet is via dial up?
I am not sure what is happening.

It is indeed a conference server used for private classes/tutorials.
Unfortunately, the owners don't want the IP address made available
except to students.

That is correct. As soon as the connection is made to the
server, I expect to see a list of available conferences to
select from, but that list never appears because the network
stops passing all data.

I don't know what the problem might be -- I suspect though that attempting
to use a MCU via dialup is pushing the bandwidth a bit. Do you have a
camera? Is it set to auto transmit on connection?

I don't have a camera, and NetMeeting is set to not do video,
and to not do duplex audio. The classes are audio in from the
tutor, and chat for the students. The bandwidth has not been
a problem for the past 5 years or more. It's just this new
computer that has the problem. |

Sorry - I am stumped -- audio only via dialup to an MCU should be OK as you
say.
I can't think of any reason for your problem and don't remember any other
similar reports.
