Ok everyone, you all know that I have posted looking for a hardware
device with content filtering for usenet and so on. It turns out my
Belkin 802.11G has a known issue with port blocking. It freezes
totally. So I can't port block with it. So, what do you all recomend
for a cheap home based broadband router that has content filtering to
block ports and web site filtering with a list of categories to choose

from to block content. Hopefully it will have keyword filtering too so

we could enter in keywords. The Belkin I use has this parental control
provided by cerberian and it's very good web site filtering.

I know of the Linksys with speedbooster technology which is their
802.11g, but I do not like their way of doing parental control. I
bought this router and took it back the next day. There are problems
with the log in and log out feature.

One more thing I want is the router to monitor bandwidth so it will
tell you how much you use. Like ok, for this week day or month we have
downloaded so much data, say 50gb or whatever. it would be nice to have
user accounts and quota control, but not necessary. the bandwidth
feature is not necessary, but something i would love if it would tell
me how much the wan port downloaded and so on.

I know that dlink and netgear do not have this sort of parental control
web site content filtering. at least i don't know of anything. i also
know Zyxel Zywall routers do that. I myself owned a Zywall 2x, but had
to send it back because it had a problem with something and they could
not fix it for me. I also tried a snapgear I think and sent it back to
them because of some issues with it. SG300 or something was the model,
300 was the model, but forget if it is SG, but I think it was.

So does anyone have any suggestions please? I'm alot more easy on this
one because I now know usenet filtering isn't going to work for me, so
I'm totally open to what anyone will suggest.

Take a look at this one: http://www.iblitzz.com/index.htm

BWA711 Super G Wireless Firewall Router
802.11g 108 Mbps Wireless LAN Firewall Router

It does have content filtering built in that you can configure and I
have no problems with it.

They don't have what I'm after, they don't tell you of any content
filtering at all on the web site, but thanks anyway.

Content filtering IS there... I don't know why it doesn't say anything on
their site about it but it is there. If this was a binaries group, I
would post the page that shows you.

It's ok, I am sorry. I do belive you. I think I was just saying I wish
companies on their info pages would tell about their products a lot more.

No problem... :-)
I agree... kind of ignorant on their part that they don't post that kind of
info.

I actually was right. This device does not do true web content
filtering. True web content filtering uses categories to block, this
router does not do this. They make you enter in keywords or urls. This
does not work since no one knows every bad url online and there's
millions of them.

I wonder if anyone knows much about any dual wan port load balancing
routers that have true category based web content filtering ?

IPcop (www.ipcop.org) has everything you asked for.
It's a standalone linux firewall with piles of addons.
Your other requirements (wireless zone, site blocking, keyword
filtering, WAN use reporting etc) are met with the free addons.
Cost is free, so long as you have an old box spare. a 400mhz, 128mb PC
would provide excellent performance.

I'm not interested in linux, but thanks, I looked at the site and found
nothing to do with usenet, but it's ok. I think I know what I have to do
now.

There's only two options:

a) Pay for it, or
b) Use the free linux option available.

You don't seem interested in either solution offered to you. If Linux
solutions are definitely out, then you need to either adjust your
requirements or your budget.

Alright, so instead of just nagging, here are some actual suggestions
that might be within your budget...

1. Linksys WRT54GS. This has a "parental control service", which allows
you to configure profiles for up to 16 people, then filter by
categories.
http://www.linksys.com/pcsvc/info.asp

2. Linksys RV series. RV042 and RV082 both have two WAN ports that can
be used for load balancing and redundancy.
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=589

All under $300. Alas, you won't get both dual WAN ports and content
filtering on the same unit.

I thank you for the suggestions. I bought that a couple months ago the
linksys with parental control and i took it back the next day because it
sucks. The log on to the net feature really bites the big one because it
auto logs you off or never logs you off. the problem there is that
programs stop running, like yahoo messenger, symantec live update etc,
it is to restrictive. it shuts you off completely and that's not
acceptable. The windows update would not even work when logged off. I
leave yahoo running all the time for checking email and the live update
must be working as other programs that auto update. The dual wan port is
something I have looked into from better companies then linksys. much
better stability and so on and they are $200 about. However there's no
parental control web content filtering in them using categories like in
the belkin and linksys. the dual wan port for load balancing is just
something that i would like to get so i could someday get another cable
modem account if i chose to. also that i would take the router and my
own cable modem to my uncles and connect his cable modem and mine to the
router so we could download fast. the load balancing was for me just a
thought and not necessary. I would consider that and use my belkin as a
switch and use the built into the belkin parental control which does
have very good web filtering via categories provided by cerberian.
however i am not sure if it would work this way and if i really want to
sacrifice the filtering from the main router.

i tried going to cybergaurd.com last night, but they were offline.
snapgear has the SG300, but that's something i tried last year and it
didn't work good for me. I tried the ZyXel Zywall 2x and after 6 months
sent it back to zyxel and they gave me my money back because it did not
do keyword filtering at all. I liked the bandwidth report features in
the Zywall 2x however.

I am totally open to suggestions for $250 or less. I've seen XinCom for
their dual wan load balancing, but again no true filter for web. I can
get the 502 model from newegg for $196. I'm slightly considering that
along with using my belkin as the parental control filter. not sure if
it'd work tho. I'm also considering the hotbrick Firewall LB2 as they
have a 30 day money back gaurantee. It cost $219. It's also dual wan
load balancing, but no true web filter with categories.

I like the Sonicwall TZ150, but over $300 is not really possible. My
parents don't have that kind of money when saving for a wedding and
taxes are here.

Linux is something we can't do since we have no pc for that and I'm not
willing to take the huge amount of time and brain power needed to learn
linux and all of that ipcop stuff. A router is user friendly most of the
time and user friendly most of the time, much easier then linux at least
for me and the routers I've used, so that's what I'm after. I am open to
router based suggestions though for $250 or less.
