Hi everyone.

I wondered what you would recommend for a home user on broadband, a good
software firewall or do you need a hardware firewall please?

I have read about agnitum is very good software firewall for home users. I
have also read that the draytek vigor 2600 plus is a very good value
hardware firewall for broadband users.

Thanks for any advice or opinions

I recomend a hardware based router which would have a firewall built in.
Not a problem when reformatting windows or whatever computer, there will
be no software conflicts of anykind ever and it protects all computers
on your network if you have more then one or in the future decide to get
more. Software firewalls sometimes can cause issues like crazy. If you
get a hardware router you should look at of course D Link, Netgear,
Belkin, Linksys, SMC, snapgear, cybergaurd, all those in my opinion are
good at protecting the connection. The only thing is that for Belkin, on
their 802.11G router you can not do port blocking because there is a
known problem that once you try to enter in ports to block, the router
will totally lock up and freeze. I know this cus I have it and it does
this. It comes with in my opinion the best web based parental control
provided by cerberian. However it is easy to bypass it by hitting the
reset button on the router itself, this will get rid of all settings, or
someone just log in the router and enter a new password without having
to know the old one for parental control. The linksys 802.11G with
speedbooster sucks bad for its parent control.

if not needed then try one from cybergaurd or SMC or snapgear.
cybergaurd and snapgear are a little more expensive and geared toward
business, but they will not freeze up on you when yer surfing the net.
SMC may not freeze either, i don't know. i do know linksys, dlink,
netgear and belkin will freeze on you sometimes, and sometimes a lot.
just surfing the net they might freeze. however snapgear and cybergaurd
wil not. i owned a snapgear for a week or so and it never froze no
matter how hard i pushed it. also you can try ZyXel as they are more
business too, but rock solid in stability. www.zyxel.com i think. look
at one of the zywall 2x, 1x router etc. i owned for 6 plus months a
zywall 2x and it was rock solid.

If you are not sure what you need then a good first step would be a box of
some kind between the modem and your computer. This assumes that your
existing modem doesn't have NAT built in.

I have also read about many software firewalls being very good. But I didn't
believe everything I read. Today I was reading firewall X's web site and it
told me that firewall X is the best firewall you could possibly want to use.

If that is your choice for an external box then go for it.
However, please don't install an entry level firewall box and then think
that it will, on its own, protect you from anything that could be thrown at
you via Internet Explorer/Outlook Express/P2P file sharing. I know you won't
but I've seen it happen.

There are many things besides a firewall to consider.

You should go with a hardware device.

I like the Hotbrick 401 on the price and warrantee. And Hotbrick has good
reviews on its product line. I plan on getting a 401W and turn it into a
wire/wireless AP switch.

Outpost by Agnitum is a very fine firewall, and it is not very difficult to
use. I went through Norton which I did not like, Zone which annoyed me, and
Computer Associates E-Secure knock off of Zone. I also very briefly tried
Sygate. Finally I tried Outpost, and I am very happy with it. I recommend
Agnitum's Outpost to you. I am not very gifted with computers and firewalls,
and can use Outpost trouble free.

I like the look of the units, the colors and stuff.
Duane, do you know where reviews are for these Hotbricks?
Do you know if they have content filtering for web sites like they have
categories to check and block etc? Their site says url filtering to
undesirable sites, is it based on keywords or categories you select?
They seem not to shabby.
Do you know for your unit, can you log in the router to see how much
data it's downloaded or uploaded for the internet like in mb or gb or
whatever?

I have been getting some bottom posting here recently. I'll check-out

just looking for tht 401W.

Ok.
http://www.sonicwall.com/products/tz150.html
For some reason that page does not give a price.
So I checked two resellers who didn't give a price either.
No doubt I could have got further with a phone call.
If I do this
http://www.google.com/search?&q=tz150
then I find a price of $171 for 1 year of content filtering.
And another $187 for anti virus.

I'm not suggesting that the OP shouldn't use a TZ150
And I think it would be nice if everyone had a device like this and was able
to configure and maintain it.
But that isn't going to happen for a few reasons.
Most people out there with a broadband modem either don't know that these
devices exist or won't pay the same price as a PC for a firewall box.

I'm not suggesting that the price of these devices is unreasonable, just
that there are large numbers of broadband users out there who aren't going
to be using one any time soon.

The 150 model I believe cost $320 or so. I found a place that sells it,
but forget who. To pay over $100 for content filtering for only one year
is a rip off, i found it for $89 I think which is about right as a lot
of software cost that much for 2 computers together, two subscriptions.
this router covers as many connected to it.
