I bought NIS 2005 because it was free after rebate, and I wanted the
latest Norton anti-virus. Now, it looks like it was worth every penny
that I paid for it. Does anyone know how to shut off/disable Network
Detector, and the useless plug-ins to IE? I have a hardware firewall and
don't need all of the useless features of this bloated, billious piece
of junk product--I only want the anti-virus functions. I have turned off
all of the functionality that I can (i.e., firewall, anti-spam,
intrusion detection, privacy control, etc.), and yet it is still messing
with my browser, and popping up a ridiculous Network Detector box every
time I reconfigure my wireless network or routing settings. I just want
the anti-virus, and I don't want anything else changed in my system! If
there are any Symantec folks listening out there, you need to allow
users to turn off any and all of features that they don't want! I guess
I should have known better than to buy another Symantec product. Maybe
there is a 'trade down' deal from NIS to NAV.

If you had looked at the first part of my post, you would have read
that I bought it because it was free after rebate. I couldn't find a
free version NAV, and mistakenly assumed that all of the NIS software
would be properly decoupled and installable separately. This is the norm
for well designed software, and was true for many previous Symantec
products that bundled NAV (i.e., prior versions of System Works). If
you don't mean to be rude, why are you calling me stupid? If you can't
answer the question that I have, why bother posting a response?

NIS 2005 is rubbish. Ditch all of it and use ZoneAlarm or Sygate. I have,
and life is now so much easier.

lol, Zone Alarm in fact is much worse in my opinion when regarding
content filtering. Sygate doesn't even have that. NIS works good mostly.

Have you tried posting to the symantec.* newsgroups yet? Seriously
there isn't a way to disable the parts of NIS a user doesn't want? I'm
in the same boat as you. I got NIS from Amazon for free after rebates
and basically wanted it to replace my soon expiring NAV subscription.
I haven't loaded NIS yet but NAV is already doing its reminder thing to
renew the subscription. Don't need another firewall software.

The first design flaw in the NIS package is that the components are not

separately *installable*. The second is that even though I have disabled
all of the components but NAV, including the firewall, every time I
reconfigure my network adapters, the Network Detector keeps popping up a
dialog telling me that it has found a new network, and asking me to
classify it. This is a totally useless function if the firewall is
turned off. The purpose is to have a different profile for the
firewall for each network the machine is a node in. But it is
meaningless without the firewall, and should be disabled if the firewall
is disabled. Same thing with the NIS modifications to IE. These should
be unhooked from IE if the NIS privacy and parental controls are
disabled. My recommendation is to look for a 'free after rebate' NAV or
McAffee AV, and remove NIS from your system. If you don't need the other
NIS functions, it will just end up messing up and bogging down your
machine in ways you will not appreciate.

I don't use IE much and don't reconfigure my adapter very often so that
part might not be a biggie for me. I might have to load NIS on another
machine and see if it is possible to go through the registry and
prevent some of the unneeded components from loading. Oh well,
tanstaafl really applies in this case, eh?

To turn off the Network Detector, click the Configure button for Personal
Firewall. Click the "Locations" tab, and uncheck the "Turn On Network
Detector" box. I hope this helps. Thanks!
