zonealarm lock up vsmon |
|
|
Suddenly, after years of unproblematic functioning, Zonealarms vsmon
starts to hog my CPU (99%, says taskmanager): a full-blown DoS
attack, it seems.
And only for 1 user: me. not when I log in as, say, admin.
Have to uninstall ZA for my comp to function again
What is happening on my Win XP SP2 machine ???
Za 5.5

It seems to be caused by the latest hotfix from MS & seems to be only for
the latest version of ZA. Have you just installed KB891711 by any chance?
If you have then removing it will resolve the problem, this seems to be a
severe problem so I'd keep an eye on the Zonelabs updates as they should
fix this fairly quickly.

I don't have KB891711 yet vsmon is leaking memory, highest I've seen it
is >250mb, engaging internet lock for a couple of minutes is the only
solution I've found to clearing the memory leak.
I've tried re-installing ZA without success /c;

I have the same problem on a win2k SP4 system with ZA 3.1.291.0 (free). The
lockup due to high vsmon.exe usage happens randomly while downloading
certain e-mails.
The only way I have found to deactivate vsmon.exe and unlock my system is to
shut down Zone Alarm. Sometimes this crashes my system requiring a reboot.
I log in as administrator, so this doesn't seem to prevent it on my system.
Hope someone on line may have some helpfull suggestions as to other
preventative measures. I will try the posted suggestion of engaging
internet lock and hope that may represent a more reliable temporary fix than
the shut down procedure.

I also have ZA v. 4.5.594.0 installed on a 2nd computer (win2k + SP4) and
have as yet not encountered the problem on this computer. It is a slower
machine with only a few application programs. |

Well, for the time being I threw off ZA and installed Sygate.
Now THAT solved my problem.
I have no interest in finding this out till the bare bones.
I may return to ZA after they fix it, but in the mean time, Sygate
seems to do the job well.
thnx and friendly greetings.
