firewall with parental control filtering needed for usenet, |
|
|
Are there any firewalls that do parental control web based,
usenet/newsgroup and p2p filtering? I need something to block adult
content from newsgroups/usenet, web sites and to block all p2p apps and
web sites like kazaa, limewire and all of those. I currently have a
Belkin 802.11g which has the parental control using cerberian,
www.cerberian.com, but it offers no usenet or p2p stuff. So can someone
please help? |

I tried out most of the parental control software out there, and was frustrated
at the amount of time it took to manage, especially for the PC-based (as opposed
to web-baseed) products. Major hassle at keeping multiple PCs up to date,
performance degradations, etc. Am now running smoothwall (smoothwall.org; but
also check out ipcop.org) It's a freeware firewall runs on a dedicated linux
box (can be pretty low end; I have it on an ibm 350 w/ 160 meg memory; got it
for $20 on eBay.) I installed it specifically for content filtering
(Dansguardian) but it has many other great features. Dansguardian is super-
flexible with the content filtering once you figure out how it works (excellent
assistance on the smoothwall.org community forums.)
As far as the P2P stuff, this is often difficult as the clients can easily
modify the ports and protocol (udp, tcp) they use. You might have to be VERY
aggressive and only allow certain ports (starting with http, https, ftp, smtp,
pop, nntp...) There is the FTWall mod for smoothwall, specifically intended to
block FastTrack p2p clients. Also lots of info on iptables to block this stuff.
Re usenet, I don't have a clue. You could possibly setup your own nntp server
and only grab permissible groups, and use the firewall to block access to
external nntp servers (allowing nntp access only to an internal ethernet
interface.)

There is new freeware product, safety.net, in downloads.com. It's
firewall + content filtering software that works at the gateway but
it's windows based.

I would have thought that some of the high-end FW appliances would be able
to do much of what you're looking for.
Does price make a difference to you?

Price used to be a concern, but now I am willing to spend a lot more if
the device can do all of what I need. There's just certain features I
need and if it could do it then I'd buy something, but if it couldn't do
everything then I would have to spend less. I used to be thinking $150
at most when I first started looking, bought a couple that didn't do
what I needed, so I sent them back for a refund. Then I started looking
again and raised my price way more then $150. Then I started seeing some
more high end stuff, but not what features cus places I looked wouldn't
tell you all of the features. My price again went way up and finally I
said to myself, ok, as long as I get something that can do what I need
I'll pay a lot more then I ever thought I would. |

I need a router like firewall device so that all computers hook into it
like a normal router so if someone was using linux or mac or any
computer they'd be filtered as well, so software is not what i am
looking for unless it did everything I need and in the right way. I've
tried all of the most known clients such as net nanny, cyberpatrol,
cybersitter etc and none of them work with usenet like I need. |

Maybe, some of the regulars that work with the higher-end appliances will
step in and give you a little info on what some brands and models can do.
I use a low-end Watchguard and if I knew what the higher end ones could or
couldn't do I would tell you. WatchGuard has independent sellers and I
would assume the others do too. You can go to the WatchGuard site and find
some sellers and call them and ask about the features you're looking for in
an appliance. That's what I did was called some sellers and got the
information I needed.
You may want to leave the Parent Control out of the conversation. ;-)

You might want to put an ICS box on your wireless
network, and the run NewsProxy. You can filter out
Usenet you do not want seen. NewsProxy is a proxy
that sits between your network, and the news server
you connect to. You will need to have an extra machine
to use ICS, or some other kind of NAT software on it. |

What you need is a firewall with a web proxy service that provides
content filtering - almost every firewall (major player) has this. The
WatchGuard Firebox III series offer this - I have a Firebox II in my
home (same blocking features as the III series) and have 14 categories
of things I can block. I can block everyone, select systems, specify
different block categories for different computers, allow users to
authenticate with the firewall and bypass (or a different set) the
filtering, and I can have different filtering for each hour of each day
of the week. It's called WebBlocker and it requires a machine to run the
web blocker service so that the firebox can access it.
In my home, all open systems are blocked from 13 of 14 categories of
stuff, 1 machine in a common area of the house is open to 10 of 14
categories for anyone. My machine and my wife's machine is not blocked
at all. All DHCP assigned addresses are blocked 14 out of 14 categories.
I also use the firewall to filter scripting, cookies, etc... out of HTTP
sessions.
Since we have our own email server in the house, I also filter all email
for executable file attachments, larger than XX meg, bad headers, etc...
Now, one other thing - and people are going to say this - if you don't
give your kids a chance to be exposed and understand they may go hog-
wild on it when they leave the house for college, but I say bull-pucky.
A firebox III 700 series is near $1500 and is a very nice unit, but it
may be a LOT more than you are willing to spend for this type of
coverage.

$1500, then ok, I'd buy it in a heart beat if it did all I need. I went
to sonicwall and looked at their content filtering box and it did not
mention newsgroups/usenet filtering. I think they use cerberian for web
based filtering cus they say 55 categories and cerberian has 55. |
