XP's firewall and router |
|
|
I'm using Win XP Pro edition, connected to the WAN via a Draytek 2600
firewalled router.
I did have Zone Alarm Free edition installed, but for some inexplicable
reason, it blocked Firefox and/or IE6 from accessing the web.
All other prgrams were fine, as were the "allow" rules for the
aformentioned programs. I couldn't fathom at what level it was blocking.
I thought maybe internet lock was on, but it wasn't.
I gave up after a few minutes and uninstalled it.
FWIW, I used to use Sygate, but recently had to reformat my PC and
install XP again, so took the opportunity to swap over.
However; how good will XP's built in firewall be in consideration my
router is firewalled?
I'm a 'savvy' user and don't install anything that is loaded with
Spyware et al, and am running a good AV package (NOD32)
Will the built in firewall suffice; it's not unreasonable is it?
Some say don't use it, others say it is fine in one direction.
My thoughts are that i'd be better having a 'full strength' solution in
place, but I'm looking for as 'lean' installation on this PC as i can,
so if I can get away with yet another app/utility taking up resources,
i'd like to.
Opinions welcome. |

Opinion: If you're as savvy a user as you say you are, then should know |
if you really *need* application control or not. Anyone who practices
safe computing behavior, doesn't run easily exploitable software (with
the exception of Windows itself) and verifies the safety and validity of
any file or program before it's executed is probably well protected
using a router and the XP2 firewall, properly configured. |

I found Outpost 2.5 to have a serious memory leak. It was installed on a
system I shared with other family members, but has since been removed.
Apparently, builds subsequent to 370 should have a fix. FYI. |

i actually cancelled the post, because on reading it back, i realised i
already knew the answer.
I'm having a brainfart day for some reason today. Guess I need to stop
working on Sundays. |

Have since uninstalled .... I installed an older version via a shareware
site. PC really got sluggish.
Moving on to something else now, not sure what yet! |
