Remote desktop unusable once remote screensaver kicks in |
|
|
I was using NetMeeting to control a remote computer. We both had
Windows XP running. They guy (in a different city from me) had to
leave but said he would leave his computer on for me to control. He
gave me control to the desktop and I had control when he left. Then I
went to my computer to work on some things and when I returned to his
computer, the screensaver had kicked in. There was no way for me to
break out of his screensaver -- the windows logo just kept flying
around. No mouse movement or keystrokes would turn off his
screensaver. I was prevented from doing anything and so had to end the
call.
Does anyone know of anyway to wake up the remote screensaver once it
activates?

I would expect that mouse movement or a key stroke would end the screen
saver but I haven't actually tested this (or heard of this problem before)
so I don't know.
What operating system is at the other end? Did you try the ctrl-alt-del
function? Did it do anything?

Brian:
We both had Windows XP running. Hitting Control-Alt-Delete just
activates in on my computer, even if the cursor over the window
corresponding to the other computer, it does not have the effect of
doing ctrl-alt-del on the remote computer. The guy at the other end
wasn't there to do anything or i could have just asked him to
reactivate it from the screensaver. So I need something I can do from
my end. (This other computer was in Belgium and I'm in the US so there
is a 6 hour time difference and the guy had to leave for the weekend.)

There is a ctrl alt del function on the controlling window (via the contol
menu-- not sure what the menu is called off the top of my head) that is to
simulate it at the other end-- that is what I meant.

I have heard of sporadic problems with password protected screen savers. I
am not sure of the exact problem or a solution.

Brian:
On my window into the other guy's computer, there is a "Control"
pulldown menu, but all it says is "Release control" which doesn't seem
like what I want. There is also a "forward control" but that is
grayed out. I didn't see anything about doing ctrol-alt-del on the
other computer. And of course I can't see anything on his computer
because it's all black (except for a flying Windows logo) due to the
screensaver.
I think the screensaver problems go beyond just the password protected
ones. This computer didn't have a password protected screensaver, just
a regular, non-password one and still I can't get it to go away. Looks
like we're out of luck. I'm using NetMeeting 3.01. In the meantime, I
just had him turn off his screensaver and turn off any power saving
options.
Thanks
Mark

OK so you aren't using the remote desktop feature of NetMeeting? -- you
made a call( or they called you) and there was somebody there to give you
control of the desktop?

The non rds desktop control function of NetMeeting is really designed to be
used with a party at the other end. It doesn't suprise me that screen
savers cause a problem for you -- especially if they are password
protected.
Is there any way you can use RDS (designed for unattended remote desktop
control)?
