dropped connections |
|

I went to Localnet about a couple of years ago. Connections were stable
and the speed was good.
Last summer Localnet sent me an exmail saying I would have to change to
one of two new dialups. Both were terrible. If I could log on at all,
the connection would be slow and wouldn't last.
I stayed with the old dialup, and it did not close as announced.
Eventually I got another email saying that number really was closing.
At Localnet's website I discovered two new numbers which served much
better than the numbers they had announced. I switched about five
months ago.
Ever since, I've been plagued with dropped connections. It's expecially
bad at lunchtime, about 3 PM (when kids get home from school), after
supper, and before the 11 PM news. I've had the same problem with three
computers using three brands of modem and three Mac operating systems
dialing in from two telephone exchnges.
I think Localnet has contracted with a modem-bank provider that rations
service by dropping connections, especially at busy times. Is this
common? How can I get better service? |

I know many ISPs will knock one offline if so many minutes of inactivity
passes (usually set to 30 minutes) or X amount of online time has passed
(usually 4 to 8 hours max per session).
It's funny you back some other ISPs into a corner and they still claim
they don't knock users offline to make room for new callers. Yet I know
of examples if you pay by the minute for access vs. unlimited, and they
don't knock you offline at all while hoping you have forgotten and you
forgot to logoff so they get this very nice big check at the end of the
month. Go figure.
