Understanding and Comparing my Modems Diags... (long) |

From my other thread I've been experiencing a problem where after
connecting at a respectable 45.5k or so under Win2K w/ Zoom 3048C
(Conexant ACF) external RS232 the connection 'goes south...'
A) The "Errors:" in the MS DUN window start going up w/ LOTS of data
throughput (light duty is OK)
B) In conjunction w/ this, speeds appear to decrease w/ increasingly
longer periods of 'dead' time w/ no activity to the point that no data
goes whatsoever though it remains connected.
Below are two complete dumps of data (including Diags) from the modem
using the AT&V, AT&V1, AT&V2, AT#UD commands and Stanislov's diag
software to further understand the data.
The FIRST (good) is from a brief, 'good' connection before the errors
piled on and lack of throughput started.
The SECOND (bad) is from an extended session including a long break I
took in which the system encountered lots of errors and finally got to
the point NOTHING could be done online down to simply sending an email
- while connected, the connection had 'died'. The modem 'lights' would
only flash briefly once in a while...
What's interesting is it appears to be maintaining the same speed
despite the errors and lack of data... - 3 lines stood out in the
second 'bad' session w/ respect to the 'good' session:
A) TOtal number of REJ sent/received: 29/7
B) Error control NAKS received : 80
C) TX/RX I-Frame error count : 1792/29
These three seem quite a bit higher than the first 'good' session.
Other than those three lines things seem pretty comparable between
them.
I'm not expert at reading/understanding these but can only compare the
two sessions to look for possible clues. If anybody would compare to
look over these or compare them side by side or something and see if
they can infer any possible culprits or explain to me why the
connection always reports 'errors' and stops passing data - much
appreciated.
As a reminder this has been duplicated across 2 different PCs,
different serial/phone cables, 2 different ISPs. I also encountered
this problem on my old trusty Supra 288/336 backup modem though these
reports below are from my Zoom 3048C V92 which I'm concentrating on
working with here. The entire house wiring has been bypassed at the
demarcation telco box. THe POTS phone line itself is of course the
same. There is a subtle hum on the line but I believe that hum has
been there before this problem became aparent.
