Can't make dial up connection |
|
|
I'm having trouble setting up a internet dial-up connection in Windows
xP. I have the dialer setup with the user name and password but when I
try to dial the connection, I get an error 633 indicating the modem is
already in use or not configured properly.
The dial-up properties indicates the modem is set for Com 3
In the control panel, under "phone and modem options" the
modem is also assigned to com 3
Clicking on properties indicates the modem is working properly.
However, opening the diagonistics tab, and clicking on "query modem"
generates an error indicating the port the modem is attached to cannot
be opened.
What can I do to correct the modem problem?

Typically, these symptoms indicate the modem is installed with the |
wrong drivers, there is an IRQ/resource conflict (which can be
corrected with proper up to date drivers) or the modem is defective.
Is this a new install of XP? Did the modem work before and suddenly
show these symptoms?

Yes, it's a new install of XP but the modem has never been used.
Maybe I should try deleting the modem and reinstalling with
the "Add hardware " Wizard?

Which drivers did you use to install it? Did it come with XP drivers on |
a disc that you used the first time? Or did you use XP native drivers?

I think I got it fixed. Problem was the modem was set to use
IRQ 3 which is also used by an unknown device called
"built-in infrared device" so I changed the infra-red device to
use IRQ 5 which didn't generate any conflicts. Rebooted the
system and all is well so far. I am now on the net replying to
your post using the new system.
I have no idea what the "built-in infrared device" is. I suppose
some some other problem will show up, but but everything seems to
working now.
Thanks for your attention,

I think the IR device is an interface built in to your motherboard. You
should be able to boot into BIOS setup and disable it there, just as you
would for an on-motherboard sound or video system, that you do not want
to use. By default, most or all of the motherboard features are ON, so
you have to disable them if you want to plug in another card to do their
functions, like a sound card or video card. That way, you won't be
taking up an IRQ for some device you will never use. Good luck.
