536EP V.92 modem |
|
|
hello,
a friend of mine has a pretty old pc, its got to be 6-7 yrs old. cant work
out the cpu speed but nearly 200 mgs of RAM. OS is W2K.
anyway, it has this modem installed and they are trying to connect to
internet, for the first time. i managed to get online (with freeserve... i'm
in UK) but speed was 14.4... eeeks!
i rang BT, got them to up the gain but still only got 14.4.
i started to thing this modem was maybe only a 28K or some such but have
done a bit of research and i think it is capable of 56K speeds? so i'd
expect at least a 40k connection.
i have downloaded a more up to date driver to see if thats the problem. i do
know the telephone lines into the property are new and possibly split to
allow more numbers. i read somewhere about DACS units and BT/ new lines...
can anyone give me anymore advice on this before i have a go with the new
driver... lol i suggested a new pc!
regards

Re: 536EP V.92 modem |

i know i have had no replies :o( but i am now wondering if there is a
compatability problem with this modem, the new driver and W2K.
i have an old diamond supra express 56i from my 98 days. i have just tried
to install it to MY pc, which runs W2K and it wont let me... talks about
MS-DOS and how it cant install. so on my pc, i cant connect at all.
i have my friends pc here at my house, have connected using my phone line
and still the best i get (with the modem of the header) is 16.8 kbs.
do you think a new modem, more compatible with W2K and telephony technology
would be a workable solution?
thanks

Try disabling the 56K modes on the modem and use V.34. If your speeds
are still low in that mode, then there is not much you can do with those
line conditions. There is not any need in trying to get 56K connections,
if your V.34 speeds are poor. DACS are multiplexers that take a good
quality line from the central office, then split it out to 2 or 3 low
quality lines. Those lines are OK for voice, FAX, and low speed DATA.
The default for modems is to try the highest speed protocol first,
unless told otherwise by commands sent to the modem. Disabling all 56K
protocols will result in a faster, or more stable V.34 connection.
Good luck.
