I am baffled by the following:

I am experiencing a weird problem where my server is seeing data which
appears to be phantom "echoes" of data that it sent out on a modem.
Could this be a problem in the telephone system??

As an example:

Server Sees: 1234567 (correct)
Server Sends: abcdefghi (correct)
Server Sees: abcx$fg%$ (WRONG)

Thus, the data coming in is a corrupted version of what the server sent
out.

There is no reason to believe that the client system is echoing this
data... (there are numerous clients and they haven't been changed at all).

Anyone ever seen such a thing? Can the telephone system introduce echoes
like this?

FYI: These are 2400 baud modems, and the calls are coming in from
various parts of the US, so long distance calling is involved.
