Do wireless routers slow down cable internet access? |
|
|
I'm looking at going wireless in my house and I'm wondering will I lose
some speed by doing so? I'm very happy with my internet connection and
I'm curious if I'll loose it's speed by going wireless.
Anyone have stories or thoughts?
Thanks,
Rob |

No.
A cable modem is typically 3 megabits at best. 802.11b, the older
wireless standard, is 11 megabits; 802.11g is 54 megabits. It'll keep
up with your cable modem just fine. I got a cheap 802.11b router for
the house and it's more than enough for my cable connection. I didn't
see any need to spend the extra money on an 802.11g router since I
almost never move files between the machines (which is where you'd see
a speed advantage).

Even 802.11b, which is the slowest commonly used wireless, is faster than
most cable or DSL connections. |

I would guess most cable modems are easily capable of 10 Mb or more, but
since they're throttled down to the ISP advertised speed of say 3Mb, you'll
never reach the cablemodem max to test it. |

Below are the full headers from the original post. Notice lack of any
followup-to and no cross posting.
Just how could we have spammed news.admin.net-abuse.email when I and
others clearly had MY message and followup set to
comp.dcom.modems.cable, and reviewed their message in _this_ newsgroup.
Care to offer an apology to the users of this newsgroup?

He wasn't talking about your original post. He was talking about "this
post" -- the post which he quoted -- which had my name in the header
but which (obviously) wasn't posted by me. They've been posted to
bunches of newsgroups, all with a follow-up header to
news.admin.net-abuse.email.
People are mortified at the content, hit "reply" without looking, and
that newsgroup gets flooded with messages from pissed-off people.
Which is what the spammer wants.

I don't feel one is warranted at least not from me. I never replied to
the message he quoted, and wouldn't reply to something so blatantly
obvious. I routinely check where the replies are forwarded and make sure
the message isn't being cross posted.
Regarding the message which the gent quoted, it wasn't part of the
thread in which I participated. I wouldn't reply to such nonsense to
begin with.
I read the message, and am not using Usenet for the first time in my
life. Neither are many others. I empathise that your name is being used
in such a manner but surely a less confrontational manner can be arrived
at for notifying people about problematic replies.
Stepping on a thread in progress and accusing everyone who participated
of flooding another group is irresponsible, especially coming from
news.admin.* tree.
With Regards,
Mrs. Karyn Guilmore. |

That's great. He wasn't addressing you.
He said, as has been quoted several times now, "Anybody who RESPONDED
TO THIS POST {the spam}... is participating in a flood of another
newsgroup."
It has *nothing* to do with the original topic at hand, nor the
original post. The subject line and references header were used to
tack it onto an existing thread. People are falling for it left and
right, replying to these inflammatory messages -- those replies are
being dumped into news.admin.net-abuse.email because people don't
notice the follow-up header. That's the whole point.
| Quote: | Regarding the message which the gent quoted, it wasn't part of the

|
No, it wasn't. That's why you're missing the point - he wasn't talking
to you, or anyone else involved in the original discussion about
wireless routers. He was talking to people who REPLIED TO THE SPAM,
and are helping to flood news.admin.net-abuse.email without realizing
it. That group is getting nearly 1000 messages a day because of this.
It's a real problem.
| Quote: | I read the message, and am not using Usenet for the first time in my

|
Glad to hear it. I'd suggest researching how References: and
Follow-up-to: headers work, because you're not grasping what's going on
here.
From your reply to Norman:
| Quote: | Below are the full headers from the original post. Notice lack of any
followup-to and no cross posting.
|
The original post is *irrelevant* -- that's what I'm trying to get
across to you. A follow-up can be set for *any* message. It doesn't
have anything to do with the original post at all.
| Quote: | Stepping on a thread in progress and accusing everyone who participated

|
Once again, YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT ENTIRELY. He's *not* accusing
everyone who participated in the actual thread of anything.. He's
addressing people WHO REPLIED TO THE DEAD BABY RECIPES -- the spam --
which DO have the follow-up-to header set to the admin group. That's
why he *referred* and *quoted the *spam* message.
I don't mean to be curt, but *you* are the one who started in and
demanded an apology when you're clearly not understanding what's going
on.

BTW... The admins at many servers noticed the abnormal activity, and
quashed the counterfeit "dead baby" posts. Many people probably never
saw them, and don't even know what's being discussed here.
For those folks, what happened is about 50 posts from the past week or
two were hijacked. New content, very offensive content replaced the real
content, and flooded this newsgroup, and other newsgroups as well. The
headers were adjusted to look like they were from the same people who
originally posted here, but they were set so that anyone who replied to
them without looking would actually post their follow-up to
news.admin.net-abuse.email instead of here.
If you missed it all, you didn't miss anything worthwhile, but you may
be puzzled by this thread, which *is* getting picked-up even on the
servers that missed the original flood of offensive messages.
