Promiscuous mode ether on WinXP

Postby John Smith » Sat Dec 10, 2005 9:47 pm

Hi,
My main PC (Netgear FA311 adapter) works fine with ethereal, but I can't get
my laptop to work (there is no option on the adapter driver for "promiscuous
mode", and it only traces itself). On Token Ring, all the adaptors have the
"Promiscuous mode" option, but funnily enough, the Netgear FA311 (ethernet)
doesn't have it, yet it works.
???

What OS are you using on the laptop and the main PC? That could be
the problem. With Windows machines, you also need winpcap in order
to get Ethereal to work.

Hi,

In my experience almost all network adapters
work with sniffers without any configuration with
the exception of some PCMCIA/CARDBUS ones.

This experience is quite old now however about 5 years ago
many PCMCIA/CARDBUS did not seem to do promiscuous
mode at all.
