Our home network uses a 3Com 3C892 router. Of late, we have had a lot
of trouble connecting to our ISP. The tech people at our ISP have a
well-deserved reputation for being clueless. They insist that they
don't have any problems.

We placed a trouble report with our ISDN provider (SBC) and they found
no problems when testing from their end of the line. They did say
that they had had several trouble calls from customers of our ISP, so
I did not have them send someone out to check the ISDN line from our
end. According to SBC, our ISP is not sending the right protocol
information. Since I am sitting behind a router on our end, I have no
way of checking what is going on during the call setup.

Ok, here's the questions. A while back, someone gave me a known-good
BitSurfr Pro ISDN modem. Unfortunately, they have lost the software
that came with it. I cannot find the software on the Motorola web
site. Do I need the Motorola software? (I'm running Win XP on some
of the computers and Ubuntu Linux on one of the machines.) If I can
get the modem up and running, will I be able to monitor the
handshaking between my machine and the ISP? Can anyone point me to an
FTP site for the software, or perhaps send me a copy?

Thanks,

BITSURFR PRO? DANG, WHERE'D YOU DIG THAT THING UP? I'M HAVING
FLASHBACKS TO 1996!.
OK NOW TO YOUR QUESTION: NO, YOU DO NOT NEED THE SOFTWARE, BUT YOU
STILL HAVE TO CONFIGURE IT, BUT YOU CAN USE A TERMINAL EMULATION LIKE
HYPERTERMINAL TO TALK DIRECTLY TO THE MODEM. IT'S MORE TEDIOUS WITHOUT
THE SOFTWARE, BUT IT ACCOMPISHES THE SAME THING. WHEN YOU GET INTO
HYPERTERMINAL, AND YOU HAVE THE SERIAL CABLE CONNECTED TO THE MODEM
FROM THE PC, YOU HAVE TO TYPE AT@MENU TO GET TO THE MENU INSIDE THE
MODEM. FROM THERE, YOU NEED TO ENTER THE SPIDS AND SWITH TYPE
INFORMATION FOR YOU ISDN LINE. HERE IS A WEB SITE TO HELP YOU WITH
THAT: http://www.inch.com/commercial/isdn/isdn-win95.php
NOW I'M NOT SURE IF XP WILL SUPPORT A MODEM THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR
WIN95, BUT IT'S WORTH A TRY.
IF THAT DOESN'T WORK, ADTRAN MAKES AN ISDN MODEM CALLED THE ADTRAN
EXPRESS 3000, WHICH WORKS WELL. 3COM MODEMS WORK WELL ALSO, BUT I'M
NOT SURE ABOUT THE ROUTER. HOPE THAT HELPS.
