NetMeeting and DirectX |
|
|
I'm hoping that someone can help. This is an esoteric problem and it's
driving me insane.
NetMeeting is somehow causing a problem with DirectX. Whenever I start
dxdiag, I am presented with the following error message:
"NetMeeting is running. Direct3D hardware acceleration may not work
until NetMeeting is shut down."
And when I flip over to the Display tab, AGP Texture Acceleration is
listed as 'Not Available' and the 'Enable' button is grayed out. This is
obnoxious, as it has caused several of my more intense games to slow
down to a near-crawl.
I first made sure that the NetMeeting service was not running -- and in
fact, listed it as 'Disabled.'
I have tried deleting the actual NetMeeting directory -- to no avail.
I have tried deleting the files in the NetMeeting directory -- and while
that was successful, the files were restored immediately.
I have tried using the advice on some websites (including Microsoft's
own website) to remove it, but all I get is an 'Install Error' ...
%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
NetMtg.Remove 132 msnetmtg.inf
Some websites have it listed as:
%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
NetMtg.Remove 132 %SystemRoot%\inf\msnetmtg.inf
(I have tried both with the same 'Install Error' message)
How can I *permanently* *remove* NetMeeting from Windows 2003 Server? I
don't use it, don't care about it, and if it's messing up DirectX, my
priority is on DirectX.
Thank you very kindly in advance,
Seth |

What you are seeing is normal behaviour if NetMeeting is running -- it
could be runnning in the background. There was another problem in Win2000
and maybe you are experiencing a similar situation -- NetMeeting crashed
and left its Directx lock on.
First (with any luck this should clear up the situation regardless of the
cause) I would start up NetMeeting go to the tools->options general tab and
click the "Run Netmeeting in the background..." box if it is off, then
click so that it on, then off. If it is on then click it it off. Then exit
NetMeeting normally. Hopefully that should do the trick.

It is part of the protected file system and cannot be deleted.

See above.

The information here -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q267958 is what you
need. AFAIK it should work for Win2003 ( it does for Win2000 and XP). But
it does not really uninstall NetMeeting(at least doesn't remove the files).

It is very difficult to remove it completely and I wouldn't advise it -- it
only affects Directx if it is running (or has been run and ended
abnormally). |

I have the same problem in W2k SP4.
Direct 3D is unavaliable, video (DivX) acceleration N/A, icons only in 16
colors.
Service is disabled, but message is still there ... |

I got the icons-in-16-colors problem, and never thought about it is related
to DirectX until I tried to install a 3D sceensaver and it reported I have
no DirectX 6 supported while my system has v9.0 installed(!!), then I
tried to run DirectX Diagnostic Tool and found the Netmeeting problem.
Thanks Brian for the Netmeeting fix, and now no Netmeeting running message
in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Once this fixed, the icon problem is fixed
by turning off the "Show icons using all possible colors" in Display
Properties, and then turn if on again. |
