Trouble with modem install |
|
|
I installed a modem in WIN98SE. It installs itself in COM2 and there is only
a COM1 for communications (and another one for a printer).
The modem won't connect to my dialup, and there is no other apparent reason.
The window says
COM1 -- no modem detected
COM2--Agere PCI Softmodem.
Modem properties says COM2.
I have removed the modem, drivers, and COM1 several times and reinstalled
but the modem still appears on COM2 with COM1 empty.
There is no COM2 in device manager.
What to do? Thanks, Pflu |

Internal modems create their own com port. |
Are you installing the driver from the disk that came with the modem?
Are you sure it's the right driver?
What error message do you get when you try dialup?
Post your modem log here. Here's instructions for viewing the log
that will work in 98 as well as 2k and XP:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog2k.asp
Can you query the modem under the diagnostics tab as shown at the
above site?
If you can't query or communicate with the modem, then my best guesses
are a driver problem, some sort of resource conflict or the modem is
defective. If you're absolutely sure you have the right driver, then
if it's a resource conflict, try mounting the modem in a different
open PCI slot.

Gary,
Your questions are answered below:
| Quote: |
Internal modems create their own com port.
|
It created COM2 but it isn't in device manager. Agere Modem is in device
manager in two places: under "modem" and under "PCI bus".

|
I'm installing the driver from the Agere CD.
| Quote: |
What error message do you get when you try dialup?
|
"No Dialtone."

Log is posted at end of this message.

|
Diagnostics says:
Windows detected the following ports. and has already installed the
following devices:
COM1 No Modem Installed.
COM2 Agere Sytems PCI Soft Modem
| Quote: |
some sort of resource conflict
|
It says "No conflicts"
I checked the physical connections with a phone--both line-in and line-out
work OK.

"No Dialtone."
Your modem logs shows DUN communicating with the modem and the modem |
not detecting a dialtone and hanging up. This could be caused by any
of the following:
- A problem with your line or line voltage. Double check your line
cord connections. Put X1 in the extra setting box as shown here:
http://www.modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.asp
X1 will tell the modem to dial without waiting for a dialtone.
- Bad drivers. Try to get updated drivers at the manufacturer's web
site.
- A resource conflict. Remove the modem from modems under control
panel, then shut down. Put the modem in a different PCI slot.
Reinstall the modem with the proper drivers.
- A defective modem. Replace the modem, preferably with a hardware
based one.

A resource conflict can exist that affects the modem's operation even |
if Win98 doesn't report it in device manager.
