browser doesn't recognize connection |

Help would be appreciated. Modem makes dial-up connection, sign-in and
password apparently accepted by Internet host, but IE and Mozilla
Firefox don't recognize the connection. Same problem with AOL:
installation uses phone line to find numbers, connection made, but
can't sign in to AOL.
Using laptop on same phone line -- connection is fine (I'm on right
now). I unplug and replug to switch computers. Desktop has been
conformed to the laptop in every way I can think of -- all network
settings, modem settings, Internet settings.
Both running Windows XP home edition.
Desktop had been used as main machine in a DSL & router setup, with
laptop connecting through a USB adaptor. Desktop readily connected via
phone line in that setup (to a remote computer using PC Anywhere).
I've moved and don't have DSL yet, but I desperately need the desktop
and not the laptop as my dial-up maching. Desktop is a Compaq Presario
061 with a Lucent Win Modem
Please send a copy of any reply to me at estes@american.edu. Because
of my cumbersome setup I'm not able to monitor this newsgroup
regularly. Thanks very much |
