Modem works with one jack, not another, same phone line |
|
|
I just bought a new dell optiplex. it didn't come with a modem, so i
installed an internal US Robotics Modem, $30 Walmart.
i have one phone line at this location, with multiple jacks in various
rooms. i can make phone calls out from each jack.
The Problem: when i try to dial out with my modem with AOL, the jack
closest to the computer will not work. if i run a phone cord to
another room to another jack, it will work. I replaced the jack, same
result. i replaced the modem, same result.
Why would i be able to call out on this jack, but not be able to dial
out with my modem?
Thanks for your help! |

In the Usenet newsgroup comp.dcom.modems, in article

Will not work - no dialtone - no sounds from the modem?
Web Results 1 - 10 of about 1,710,000 for phone+line+tester
radio+shack. (0.76 seconds)

Could be the wiring of the jack - compare it to the wiring in the
other room - specifically which pin gets 'red', which 'black' and so
on. If there is a Radio Shack in your area, they have (the google
search term above) a $5 or $6 phone line tester.
Radio Shack. You've got questions, we've got blank stares.
Radio Shack - you've got questions...we've got dumb looks!
Radio Shack. You got questions, we got answers. Usually, "Duh, I dunno."
but in this case, they may help.

What error message do you get when you try? No dial tone? |
Most likely the jack is wired incorrectly, but that would mean a
regular phone set shouldn't work correctly either, and apparently it
does. Is the jack at the end of a wire run or in the middle of one
with wires coming in and going out?

I'm going to find out more details tomorrow. The weird thing is that
there used to be an old gateway computer (not sure what kind of modem)
in this spot, and dial up worked fine on this jack. i'm really
confused....
If the jack's wired wrong, how could the phone dial out? if the phone
can dial out, why can't the modem make a connection? if it can't make
a connection, why can it on the other jack????
Tomorrow i'll try and post some answers to what exactly is happening
when trying to dial out. also, the location of the jack (i think it's
at the end of a wire).

Heh heh... it could be the jack is wired correctly, the phone
will dial out and function correctly, and the modem is correctly
failing!
This may or may not be your problem, but it is not uncommon. If
you have two lines, one wired to red/green and one wired to
yellow/black on that jack, many modems have internal
connections to the "second line", and will fail to work if the
jack has anything connected.
Regardless, inside the jack disconnect everything except the
actual two wires (probably red/green, but possibly
blue/blue-white, or even something else) that are for the
telephone line you are using. Or, use a jumper cable that has
only two wires to connect from the jack to the modem. That is
usually the kind included with such modems, and sometimes this
problem only manifests itself when a new cable is used, causing
the modem to cease working.
(I've never seen a thing about /what/ they wire the 2nd line to
inside the modems, and have no idea if it could be useful or
not.)
