Got this used machine, Dell xps 800MHZ, win98 Modem is recognized under system,
Com 5 IRQ 10, standard v90 modem.

Problem is when running "diagnostic" I get: cannot open port When running DUN
I get "error 630"

Trouble is there is only one comm port listed under ports and one comm port
on back of computer-com1

So, being rather dumb in this area, why does system say modem is assignedto
comm 5? And, how do I get this sucker working?

I normally don't reply to posts sent via anonymous remailers, but this

seems legit I guess.

Try setting up hyperterminal to Direct to Com5 and see if you can
connect to the modem and issue AT commands. If you can post back and
we can go from there. Here's one page that describes how to do it:

http://www.sierrawireless.com/supportdownload/supportdownloaddocumentation/MPWizard/opening_a_hyperterminal_sessioncsc.htm

If that fails to connect then I'd guess the modem is bad or not
installed correctly. To install it properly you probably will need
the original drivers disk, but you might have a chance if you remove
the modem from device manager (or from modems under control panel)
reboot, and see if it redetects it with drivers already on the
machine.
