To avoid using a server, I read that I can use IP
addresses.
If I just give someone my IP address to call me and have
informed them that I am online, what would I need to have
typed in the Directory box in NetMeeting or if I call
someone using their IP address what would I need to have
typed in the Directory box in NetMeeting?

If I use their IP address when making a call, would the
setting used be automatic instead of network or directory?

Thank you for your help.

You do not need to use a directory at all -- the direct calling via IP or
computer name is not dependent on any directory setting. Just leave the
default setting ( and turn off the automatic login on startup.

See above

Generally the "automatic" setting works well for all calling as it infers
the calling method from the supplied address. Using "network" would force
the call process to be IP or computer name based.
