No audio on LAN NetMeeting call |
|
|
I've never used NetMeeting before. I have a wireless LAN with 3 PCs,
2 running Win2000 Pro and one running WinXP. I'm trying to use
NetMeeting v3.01 to be able to speak between the 2 Win2000 machines on
the LAN. No internet calls are required at all.
I configured NetMeeting on the 2 PCs and was able to make a
connection from either machine, by entering the LAN IP address of the
other machine. The call functions perfectly, all works well except
audio (and video).
When I configure the microphone setup on each machine, I can see the
VU-meter moving in that dialog. When I'm connected and speak in the
microphone, the VU-meter under the mic's volume control does not move
at all (or is this not a VU-meter over there?) Should those VU-meters
move (with/without an active call)?
Why is audio not working?
Thanks for any help.
PS:
If you need info on our firewall configuration and network layout:
1) I've disconnected from the internet, and shut down the software
firewalls on both machines to make sure it's not a firewall issue.
Audio still doesn't work in that case.
2) The 2 machines are connected via a wireless access
point/router/ADSL modem. The Access Point is configured as follows:
- The ADSL modem is not connected to a phone line (this is not where
we are getting our internet connection). The DHCP server is disabled.
Therefore I assume that the router's firewall is not having any effect
(it has not been necessary to configure it in any way with our current
wiring scheme), since it's protecting its ADSL modem, which is not
connected to anything.
- So we are using this box only as a router and wireless Access Point.
- My PC is using a Wireless adapter to connect to the access point.
The other PC is connected to the access point via an ethernet cable to
one of the router's ports.
- My PC is connected to the internet via an ADSL modem and NIC. It is
using ICS to share its internet connection with the 2 other PCs on the
LAN.
- Everything on this LAN is working perfectly well (firewalls are
properly configured). We even have servers that are getting
connections from the internet without any problem.
- So there are 3 firewalls involved: One on each machine, and one in
the router. I think the one in the router is being bypassed as I said,
and I've tried disabling the 2 on the machines, but audio still
doesn't work.
- NetMeeting is not allowed to access the internet as this does not
appear to be necessary for our needs. However, even allowing it to try
and go to a directory didn't help, as it appears there is none out
there any more. |

Asssuming all calls are between stations on your local network the only
things I can think of:
1) a "secure" call is being made -- that would force a data only call
2) a policy configured on one of the machines disallows audio/video calling
3) a data only call is being forced some other way ( though if you you a
calling using the IP address as the calling address that is unlikely)
4) a firewall or IPSec setting on one of the machines is blocking H.323 port
access
